Lake Lucerne Car Ferry

Driving from Grindelwald to Weggis, is there a car ferry to cross the lake or would it be better just to drive. Mapquest takes you thru Lucerne, up and over. Wouldn't it be a more scenic drive to go the southern route around, thru Brunnen & Vitznau? How long a drive would that be? I would want to get to Weggis early afternoon to take the Ferry into Lucerne, sightsee, have dinner, and ferry back. ((b))

There's a car ferry between Beckenried and Gersau. However, I agree with you, the southern route through Fluelen and Brunnen is very scenic. If you have the time, take it.

Enjoy!

The drive to Vitznau around the southern part of Lake Lucerne via Fluelen and Brunnen would take something over an hour from the point where the highway divides and you can either go north to Lucerne or west toward Fluelen. Taking the ferry will save you about 30 minutes. It is hard to say whether the drive is more scenic due to two things (i) about a third of o the drive is through a tunnel, and (ii) another half of the drive along the west bank of the lake is actually the main highway up from the Gotthard tunnel from Italy and tends to be quite full of traffic, including a lot of trucks. IMO, a better way to see this part of the lake and the really lovely mountains surrounding it is actually by the regular ferry the visit the towns in the Urnersee area like Fluelen. If you want to drive it is not a lot of time to get to Vitznau this way, so not a big deal. However, the car ferry is actually a lot of fun, and is quite an unusual way to travel for most people, they were always one of my favourite things in Switzerland. It is very easy to do, just drive on and drive off, extremely well organized as most things are in Switzerland.
