Lake Garda

We will be visiting Lake Garda in Sept. for three nights, two full days and two half days. We will arrive by train from Venice. Our interests are mostly visiting some of the towns along the lake. Where is the best place to stay and which towns are the best to visit and easiest to see via ferry.. We would like to use our time wisely.

We spent a couple of days on Lake Garda in September last year, you might like to take a look at my trip report.

We stayed between Desenzano & Sirmione and I wouldn't recommend our hotel if you didn't have a car. Sirmione was a lovely town in a great setting but very busy and accomodation on the peninsula was expensive. If I was to go back I would stay in the town of Desenzano - a very nice town with a ferry terminal and probably a little cheaper than Sirmione. We enjoyed a vist to Salo, and we also thought that Riva del Garda at the northern end of the lake was very nice.

Sirmione is lovely, but I find the northern shores of Lake Garda more interesting and the scenery more beautiful. I have stayed three times at the Hotel Castello in Malcesine, and I highly recommend it.

I much prefer the north end---Riva, Malcesine, or Limone.
