I think I see why you got lost! ;-) Those stacked rocks are called cairns and they serve as trail markers.

Oy vey. Well, next time I know. They don't look very permanent though. Hey, maybe next time, I'll just bring a gps. :)

Thanks for sharing. The view from your cottage is so beautiful! We'll be going to the Lake District this July. It'll be my first time. Looking forward to it. Still looking for accomodations (a bit tricky since will be going with my hubby, our 2 girls and my in-laws).
Hope we can find a cottage like yours.

Alas, I was told that I was one of the last people renting the cottage because the owners changed hands. I found it through a website - can't remember the name - something like cumbriancottages.com.
