Lake District
I am planning to stop at Lake District on my trip back from Edinburgh to London. Which is a good town to stop? Any recomendation for things to do and places to visit?

There are lots of small towns, but our favorite is Keswick. Hiking is wonderful in this area. Also there are a lot of little shops in the town. A lot of people go to the Beatrix Potter museum-I've never had a chance because too busy hiking.

Ambleside would be my choice. Visit Windermere, but don't stay there - too touristy and commercial!
Have a lovely time, Firefly |
I'd also suggest Keswick.
Look at http://www.keswick.org/discoverbutt.asp Derwentwater is IMHO the most beautiful of the Lakes. The tourist centre has details of walks of all levels of severity. |
Just a little clarification:
We stayed in Windermere proper and it was a nice and cozy little town, not touristy at all. Bowness-on-Windermere is the town on the lake and yes, it is very touristy. I found Keswick to be touristy as well, but while there go see Castle Stone Rigg circle. Great views atop the hill. Also, don't miss the Browne house in Townend, a remarkable architectural achievement run by the National Trust. See link: http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/scri...a=North%20West |
