Lake Constance - where to stay
What's a good base, for a couple travelling with rail passes? I've looked at Konstanz or Meersburg so far. We like nice nature scenery and architecture.

To me Lindau is one of the finest cities anywhere - sticks out into the Bodensee and has great rail connections.
The other cities are fine as well, esp Konstanz but to me Lindau is exceptional. |
I suppose most people here will recommend Meersburg because it's so romantic and because that's where all tourists from overseas seem to stay. Since you are dependent on public transport, however, I'd vote for Konstanz. The train connections are so much better and it's easier to get around in all directions around the lakes, both on the German and the Swiss side. I picked Konstanz as a base for a 10 day vacation a while ago and it was perfect.

Yes, that is the debate - public transport. I've heard that Meersburg is busy during the day, so I would love to stay there and experience it after the crowds have gone, but convenience of transport is definitely a factor, which makes me lean towards Konstanz or Lindau.
Also, does anyone know if there is a one/two day pass for the bus system and ferries at the Bodensee? |
I've never really had a good look at Meersburg but am putting it on my to see list thanks to comments here

They have tickets for single zones, adjoining zones or the whole region. It includes trains, buses, ferries, reductions for cable cars, museums, castles etc. - also on the Swiss and Austrian banks of Lake Constance. Prices for Adults or small groups (1-2 Adults plus up to 4 kids). |
Thank you - I had trouble making out info on the (translated by google) website, but from the prices I'm thinking we'll probably be better off with individual tickets, as we are only doing bus from Freidrishshafen to Meersburg (day one) ferry to Mainau (day two) and bus to nearest train station from Meersburg (day three), and the admission reductions to local attractions are not very much.
