Nice to know about alternatives but there are reasons a "lot" of people stay mid-lake.

Nothing is unnamed. Even the small Lake Como boat with the official name "Innominato" has a name.
But nobody is forced to explore a area, to like small historic places or even places with more indigenous people than tourists.

The problem is that many of us do not have time to explore the area even if we want to. We have very limited vacation time and have to go back to work. I hate crowds, but we had to stay in Menaggio, which was not too appealing but had convenient boat connections and our hotel included parking for our rental car.

I have no doubt that they have names, but you did not provide them. Nor did you answer my question about public transport.

Public transport is generally by ferry boat. That is how we traveled around for two weeks.

You can peruse the ferry website to see where the boats stop. Some towns have fairly infrequent service which would probably make them nice for a respite but perhaps not as a base for exploring the lake.

So you are talking just about places on the lake, with ferry service? I thought you might be recommending places away from the lake.

You can travel around all the lake and stay in different places. I was there 4 years ago and I fell in love.

It all depends upon what you like. If you like peace and quiet, relatively uncrowded, and, of course, splendid views of the lake, Lenno is my recommendation. We've stayed at Albergo Lenno 3 or 4 times (each time for at least 3 nights), and loved it. Visits to Varenna & Bellagio have never made us want to stay in either place...but again, it all depends upon what you like.
