Lake Como- how much time?

Hello,
I will be traveling to Italy in July and want to spend a few days in Lake Como. I am single, in my 30's and have been told I shouldn't spend too much time there as it's an older crowd and there isn't much to see. I've also been told to head to St. Moritz to break it up- 3 days in Como and 3 days in St. Moritz. For those that have been to either of these destinations, what would you recommend? I don't need a party scene but wouldn't mind being in an area with a nightlife and people my age. I love to explore and relax as well, so was surprised that a few days in Como would be too long. Thanks for any suggestions!

We were in Varenna several weeks ago and I really loved the town. Yes it was quiet but that was part of the beauty of the town. I am sure later on in the summer there is more business. There were some bars open at night with locals and tourists alike. No disco or raves! I am not sure what you like but you can easily travel by ferry or train to any of the towns on Lake Como. I probably would not spend more than 4 days there if you like some nightlife etc. If you are looking for some quiet relaxation in a beautiful setting Varenna could be it.

I can't speak to the night life scene but.. Two years ago, we were there for basically one day (plus the afternoon before a little of the following morning). Since that was no where near enough time, we now have plans for 5 to 7 days this time. We hope to use the ferry (and the other scheduled boats) to explore the various lake front towns.

I beleive that there is a hostel in Menaggio, so that might be more what you are looking for (but the place did feel like a family resort).

I would take at the very least 3 full days. You will probably want to spend more time then that. Take the ferry to Bellagio to buy ties, shop and eat lunch. Como has alot of cool shoe shops (like all of Italy) and tends to be very relaxing.

Thank you for your suggestions! I'll add Varenna to the list of villages to see. I am looking forward to it!

I'd consider spending some time in Lugano, Switzerland on your way to St.Moritz. Just across the border from Como, it's bigger and more beautiful (IMHO) with more to do than Como. It's one of my favorite cities.

It's not quite as laid back as the Lake Como area, so it depends what you're looking for.
