Lake Como hotels
Hello I reserved a room at Albergo dulac on Lake Como several weeks ago for a 3 night stay in June. I had reserved a room with a balcony, but now I am told that I have a room with a "small lake view". It is very unlikely that I will be able to find a room with a lake view/balcony at this late date. If anyone has stayed at the hotel du lac I would appreciate any suggestions/or discription, about the single room with "small lake veiw" or other hotel options. Thanks

I think there are two du Lacs. Are you staying in Bellagio or Varenna?
|
I think there are two "du lac" hotels and they are both in Varenna!
|
Have you tried the BellaVista in Menaggio BTW?
|
Sorry,I am referring to the Hotel Du Lac in Varenna. But I am now considering Hotel Belvedere in Bellagio it is pricy but they say I can have the lake view w/balcony. Any thoughts?

I enjoyed the du Lac in Varenna, but we had a large room with a terrace. Ask them if it is a large room. I saw a small single that would have not been acceptable to me. I liked staying in Varenna and the peaceful area where du Lac is located. No shopping here -- the shopping is in Bellagio. From du Lac I was able to walk to the Villa Monestaro and the Villa Ciprissi.
My favorite restaurant on Lake Como was Bilicus (spelled wrong I'm sure) in Bellagio. |
There is only one reason to go to Lago di Como as far as I'm concered, and that's to sit on your terrace and look at the lake. I would pay the premium.
I stayed at Eremio Gaudio in Varenna with a spectacular lake view. I brought food and wine to my terrace and seldom left. You might check out the offerings there. Not a good choice if you can't do a bit of uphill walking. |
I would also like to suggest you stay at the Eremio Gaudio Hotel. I stayed there in October 06 and it was one of the most romantic places I've ever seen. The views of the lake are simply stunning. The staff is very helpful. They sell great Spumante! ;-) Enjoy Como Lake wherever you decide to stay, it is a beautiful area.

Thanks for all your thoughts, I think I have found a room at the hotel metropole in bellagio, much better price than the belvedere, and it seems to have good reviews.

here2there,
We stayed at the Metropole a couple of years ago & really enjoyed it. Here's a link to my trip report which might help; http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34598121 Jim |
Thanks Jim, great trip post.

Others may disagree, but the lake view at the Belvedere is out to the small part of the lake. The views from some of the hotels in the "downtown area of Bellagio" including the Metropole right on the water are of the two main forks of the lake and are spectacular.
We stayed at Hotel du Lac in Bellagio a couple of years ago and that was fine (with a little balcony) but it was no comparison to the spectacular balcony hanging over the water at the Metropole. |
And here is a link to my trip report and photos. You'll have a wonderful in Bellagio.

luvtotravel, great post. Your glowing review and great pics of du Lac, have me a little nervous about giving up the room "with small lake view" I had resevered there. I hope the Metropole is as wonderful, but really, it is on the shore of Lake Como Italy, no worries.
