Lake Como dining
 

I've seen a few Lake Como restaurants mentioned on this board: Bilacus and Silvio most often. Why are these two good i.e. food, atmosphere, value? Are there any particular dishes that are outstanding? Any other recommendations appreciated - we'll be staying in Bellagio but will have a car and will travel for good (doesn't have to be gourmet) food. <BR>Thanks!<BR>

JB,<BR><BR>Two years ago, we stayed in Varenna, which is just a 10 minute ferry ride from Bellagio. I can't for the life of me remember the name of the place, but it was right along the water, under the stone walkway, and had a lovely patio facing west. The food was wonderful, and it was the place everyone in town told us to go. Varenna is very small, so it would be easy to find, but you'll need reservations. The best thing of all: appetizers, entree, and a nice bottle of wine-$50. Gotta love Italy.

Stayed at Hotel Restaurant Silvio a month or so ago. Its walkable from the town center, but you have to walk in the street. The food was, I thought, very good. The proprietor catches the day's fish every morning.

Hello JB,<BR>I ate at Albergo Olivero in Varenna. It was the best meal I had on my trip. The hotel is an ~4 story yellow building right near the ferry dock. The price of the meal was 30 Euros for a 3 course meal. <BR>I didn't go to the place that I think AJs was describing (Albergo Varenna or something?? I know the place he/she means) because it was closed on the day I wanted to go there.

Bilacus is a multi-generational family-run restaurant. They don't speak much English but are very friendly. The food is very good (not great) and servings are generous. Prices (especially for the fixed-price menu) are quite reasonable. The place is popular with tourists and local residents so you'll need reservations. We were able to make same-day reservations in mid-October. In high season, you'll probably need to reserve a day or two in advance. In good weather, you can eat on a charming patio.<BR><BR>We've recommended this restaurant to several friends, and no one has been disappointed.
