Lake Como - Bellagio

Could anyone advise if we would be be better off staying in the old town of Bellagio rather than an apartment 1 kilometre away - old town apartments don't sound as luxurious as those slightly out of town, but would we miss out on the atmosphere. We do like our home comforts but would the walk be very hilly (San Giovanni I think). Would really appreciate some advice as we have the flight booked already. Many thanks.

Will you have a car? If not, I would stay in town.

My initial reply is on your "other" posting of this same question - - http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34509092

With a car, I think you would have nothing to worry about. But even without one, I don't think that it is out of the question to stay in this place, especially, if it is a stay of a week.

And http://www.bellagiolakecomo.com/italiano.html lists a telephone number for taxi service IN Bellagio (under "INDIRIZZI UTILI") if the "stagger factor" gets too great after troppo vini.

Best wishes,

Rex

We were definitely going to hire a car, but reading the postings it sounds like we may not need one. We would want to walk to restaurants etc and if we stay in the centre parking may be tricky. Any ideas of taxi fares Linate-Bellagio.
Many thanks for map link - looks like there is a main road to walk along from San Giovanni - could be tricky at night. Still not sure where to stay but leaning towards Bellagio town.

Aha - just found exactly what I needed to know - that walk is pretty dodgy. We want to be able to walk to restaurants and back without the hassle of driving or taxis (we have enough of that in England) - so the centre it is. Is this a brilliant website or what!!!

Angie - you're right. We JUST got back and I'd absolutely recommend the center. I walked to San Giovanni once and it is HAIRY at parts with no sidewalk or shoulder at all and cars only inches from your body as they pass. It's easy to park a car by the hotel Bellagio. We saw cars parked there for days up on the hill near us. Don't forget to visit VARENNA. Awesome.
