I love bilboburgler's and pariswat's comments. I also love meringue and macarons and have at least one macaron a day while in France. Last summer the boulangerie on the corner had red, white & blue ones in advance of July 14. I still dream about them, a little crunch, then melt in the mouth with a yummy cream in the center. Mmmmmm.

I think they're yummy, and go well with coffee. My favorite French dessert has to be Éclair, though. |
To me the most disappointing European dessert is Churros. They look like elongated donuts, and don't taste nearly as good.

Hot churros and chocolate are a wonderful, if fattening thus infrequent, breakfast. The Spanish are otherwise still far behind the French and Italian in quality and variety of desserts.
I too do not see the charm of French macarons. Jewish macaroons are made from from either coconut or ground almonds and occasionally dipped in chocolate. |

In northeastern France (or at least in my region of Lorraine), the word <i>macaron</i> designates a droplet shaped item made of coconut flakes. In the rest of the country, this is called a <i>congolais</i>.

Have never been a macaron fan. If I'm going to indulge in empty calories from France (or Switzerland), I'll take an Opéra or a Himbeerschnitte. Or head up to Dresden for a slice of the CoselPalais' decadent and delicious Prater cake.

Funny thing is, we were in Paris several years ago. We had never heard of Lauderee macarons. But one day we happened to pop into one of their bakeries and bought a couple of them to have with our picnic lunch. They were OK.
Then, right after that, upon returning to the States, we kept seeing them everywhere -- online, a shop in NYC, etc. |
I love meringue and had plenty of Lauderee macarons in London and Paris but honestly, I got burned out on them. Just didn't want them any more. They were delicious and I loved them, but something has happened in my "dotage", the sweets are not as fabulous as they once were.
I got some very expensive chocolate at Harrods and threw half of it out. Just did not like it. I really don't know what's wrong with me. LOL |

Our first apartment rental in Paris the landlord bought us 6 in a little box and loved them because of the colours and flavours. They have popped up everywhere but nothing compared to a madeleine. I am over cupcake shops as well. Sort of funny when you think about it. Coffee at a McCafe is not bad.
