I've done a number of different ways and all worked out OK.

Bring and use my normal pocketbook from home, medium sized, leather, with a comfortable thick strap that is long enough to go bandelero style.

I also have a small leather Fossil mini-purse that functions as a wallet plus (enough room just for kleenex, lipstick, sunglasses, passport) with a shoulder strap. That's usually what I use thru airports and on the plane. It tucks into my carry-on easily.

Sometimes I pack a LeSac style largish-tote in the checked luggage and put that together upon arrival to use as my day bag.

I have a new Land's End medium canvas tote that I used for the first time as carry-on recently for the plane and LOVE love love it. But it's too big for everyday use on a trip. Just for the plane ride over and possibly as a beach bag or fur a grocery shopping run.

I swear by a nice small purse/backpack. It keeps both of your hands free and it isn't swinging all around your body. They are also very comfortable if you are out all day. Plus my husband can carry it a bit and not feel so weird. Something along these lines:

I have two backpacks now and love them both.

I really like my medium sized Baggalini purse. It has plenty of room for anything I need, a zippered compartment next to your body, etc.

Thanks to all. I went shopping today and found a great medium size tote. It has a zipper on the top and inside has a zipper and a clasp to hold such things as a key chain etc. I bought a small wallet to tuck inside the zippered area so I feel much better and I won't need to take another purse. If anyone tries to get into the bag I had better feel it!! I also am taking a money belt well actually 2 one for hubby and that way we can hide extra money.
