La Spezia or Sestri Levante with a 2 yr old and 5 yr old

We will be traveling to Italy in early July. We would like to set up a home base and I think that one of these 2 cities would be good so that we can do day trips to places like Pisa, Tuscany, etc. via train. Which city would be good for 2 kids? I would like to have access to a beach as well. Thanks.

We have stayed in Sestri Levante and passed through La Spezia. You have picked two cities that are not very attractive compared to others in the area. Both are commercial and industrial. Although it is not on the beach, Lucca is a lovely city and would a nice area to base. I don't know much about the trains there, however. Perhaps someone else can speak to this.

Sestri Levante is a very popular beach resort with long sandy strands. I think it would be ideal with two kids...

la Spezia is a not so attraactive port city--not what you want. Sestri is lovely but a bit far up the coast. I suggest you look at Levanto for a better location and a very nice beach. Look at Villa Margherita.
