La Fête Nationale

Francophiles will appreciate some of the music on the Dutch classical music station today. It is on line at http://www.classicfm.nl/. They just played Edith Piaf singing La Vie en Rose.

BBC Radio 3 just played the full Berlioz version of the Marseillaise with Placido Domingo.

Here's another performance of it:

Paris Perfect sent me an email about the Bastille Day fireworks at the Eiffel Tower. (5pm eastern time) THis year's theme is Broadway to Paris. Sounds fabulous.

The article says we can watch on our computers. But where it says "click here" there is no link. I wrote and asked them to provide the link but don't know if they are working today.

I did a little Googling with no success. Does anyone have the link for watching live?

kerouac Jul 14th, 2011 03:33 AM

They are expecting one million people tonight, because there is a big concert on the Champ de Mars beforehand.

JeanneB Jul 14th, 2011 03:57 AM

Paris Perfect sent me the corrected link:

Bastille Day fireworks -- live at 5pm EDT
http://14juillet.paris.fr/

They may show part of the concert as well, so I'm going to try to tune in early.

The fireworks are spectacular - thanks for posting this link.

I'm working, really.

spaarne Jul 14th, 2011 01:43 PM

JeanneB,
Thanks for the link and the second effort. The show was great.

....... absolutely wonderful fireworks display with almost 38 minutes of fire in the sky and what a tribute to the songs of broadway. The City of Paris deserves a huge hand of applause ....... thank you so much Paris.

I missed it! Can't figure it out.

At 4pm I went to the webpage and the countdown said it would start in 59:56. I thought I must have miscalculated by an hour. Went and did laundry and came here to post the corrected time.

Just now it was showing 14 minutes to show time. I came here to tell you guys I'd messed up the time. And you had already watched it! I refreshed the page and it said they were over. Boo hoo!!!!

goldwynn Jul 14th, 2011 01:54 PM

.....JeanneB ...... I am sure I saw a note that it would repeat but forgot the time posted. Good luck.

StCirq Jul 14th, 2011 02:45 PM

I missed it too, but there's a message that there were too many people to follow the live link and it will be possible to see it again in quelques heures (several hours) - who knows what this is, though?

kerouac on Jul 14, 11 at 6:33am: They are expecting one million people tonight, because there is a big concert on the Champ de Mars beforehand.

Not sure if it was a million, but it sure was a huge sea of humanity. After the show we walked from Champs de Mars to the St Michel metro before we could get on any public transport, just got home a few minutes ago. Gendarmes and/or other uniformed officers were more prominent than I recall in the past few years, several posted at each metro station, preventing folks from entering via the exits and promoting order among the throngs waiting to get into the stairways.

The show was indeed darn good. Show tunes and fireworks in Paris - it's an old queen's wet dream!

JeanneB Jul 15th, 2011 04:33 AM

LOL! I think that website is torturing me!

I got all excited because they have put up a 35 minute video of the fireworks. Yeaaaa!

Then I played it. No Eiffel Tower. It looks like the camera is aimed at the Trocadero. Why would they do that?!!!!

kerouac Jul 15th, 2011 04:45 AM

The camera is on the Eiffel Tower because all of the fireworks are shot from Trocadéro. The Eiffel Tower is completely dark during the fireworks, and then it sparkles at the end so that everybody will know that the show is finished.
