La Fontaine de Mars closed for construction

Since I know this is a popular resto with lots of posters here, I thought I would let you know that La Fontaine de Mars (in the 7th in Paris) is, in fact, closed and being gutted for renovations. I walked by yesterday and the workers were pulling out all kinds of debris, and the place looked to be under major construction. The first time I walked by a few weeks ago, I thought it was just going to be minor stuff, as all the furniture was still in there, but the work must just have been beginning. I don't know how long it will be closed - there were no signs up in the windows.

Each time I head over to the American Library I walk by, so I'll keep you all appraised of the progress.

My apologies that I don't know exactly what the renovations are. Maybe I'll make friends with the workers on one of my walks and get the full scoop. ;-)

Merde! (can I "say" that here?) I was hoping to dine there in early May - sounds like I will to find an alternative.

Suec, I can't imagine it would take more than four months to do the work. I just read on e-Gullet that Mon Vieil Ami closed for major renos and reopened again before anyone on the board noticed. It makes sense for a restaurant to do that kind of work outside of the tourist season.

Just across the courtyard from La Fontaine de Mars is Les Fables de la Fontaine. It's excellent and is just receiving it's 1st star!

New update. I passed by La Fontaine de Mars and there is now a bunch of metal siding around the resto to hide the construction. A new sign said they will open again in mid-April. As I was walking by, I took note of the exact date, but then of course, promptly forgot it. Will note it next time I walk by.

This is where Mr. and Mrs. Obama had dinner last night after returning from Normandy.

Yup, Fontaine de Mars:

Obama chose roast lamb, while his wife, one of the girls and two guests -- "a US writer and a fifth person" -- went for beef fillets.

Too bad someone didn't tell them to try the cassoulet.

I wondered how they could have dinner there when it was closed for construction (I did see the photos on the news last night), then noticed the OP was from a couple years ago.

And He refused dinner with President Sarkozy for this dinner, but it was not a snub per news reports here in the US. He is simply too busy. He has to hurry home and manage the financial crisis, appoint a few more Czars or something.

Seriously, it is nice that he took the time for a real meal with his family rather than a stuffy political one.

When I saw this I remembered how much we love Les Fables de la Fontaine. I'm pleased it has a well deserved star.

Sorry the Obamas drink Coke. We only buy it to use as a drain cleaner. Really--if you have a clog, try two 3 litre bottles first.

marisylvia, they ate at "La Fontaine de Mars", not Les Fables de la Fontaine.

We use coke to clean the battery acid off the car battery. Wouldn't put it in my stomach.

Later reports claimed they drank water. History is already being rewritten.

The report I read did say they did not have wine, and the bill was around 270 euro. That restaurant is obviously not cheap, even if that is a bill for two adults and two kids. Maybe the kids had Coke, who knows, but why would one be sorry that the Obamas drank Coke? Who cares what someone else drinks.

Good choice of resto, imho, at least we had a really good
meal there only slightly spoiled by a table of loud Texans
who wanted to buy the linens and refused to take 'non' for
an answer. Good dining entertainment in a way.

I have never thought much of Fontaine de Mars, along with many other people. Fables, on the other hand is a great favorite.
