La Colombe D'Or, St. Paul - Restaurant Menu?

Hello, I was planning on taking my parents for a nice anniversary lunch next week and have booked La Colombe D'Or in St. Paul de Vence. However, I have been reading some conflicting reviews on the quality of the food there, running from fantastic to awful! and I wanted to get an idea of the cost also.

I also wanted to get an idea of their menu, but their website is not the best. Any thoughts or comments from those who have been there?

If anybody has any other suggestions of some place special I would be delighted. We are following up lunch with a trip to Monaco to see the Princess Grace Expo. (this day is all for them because its their 47th Anniversary) Thanks.

First off, may I commend you for planning such a lovely day for your parents....and a wondeful 47th for them!

All I can say about CD'Or is that we thoroughly enjoyed lunch there a year ago. We coupled it with a visit to The unique Maeght Museum close by. I think they would love that too, if you can fit it in.

At CD'Or, we had booked on the internet a few months in advance and were warmly greeted by the hostess and escorted to our table next to the railing on the terrace within two minutes. Service was impeccable from that moment on...no hovering, thank goodness, just prompt and very courteous sevice. The noise level was almost at a whisper, and the umbrella protected from a very warm mid-day sun (it was April).

For starters we were treated to a special-of-the-day of the finest looking and tasting white asparagus...Roz had a delicious fricasee
with slices of chicken breast and thigh, and I had buttery, garlicky sole (artfully stripped at tableside..not me, the sole!)...

Dessert began with a sampler cheese dish and ended with a crispy-lidded creme brulee and chocolate sticks... all of which we mindfully split.

I don't think I have he cost in my journal, but I recall that lunch came to around $110 with carafe of wine.

It was a most enjoyable visit. I would heartily recommend it for you and the folks. Upon leaving be sure to take a stroll to the pool where some Calder's are spread about....you will walk through the inviting lobby of the hotel to get there.

Thanks Stu, it sounds just perfect to me in every way. I will keep the resv.

We are staying at the Villa St. Maxime within walking distance of St. Paul, (and who serve lovely boozy late champagne breakfasts!) so it should be a nice day. I think we might end the day off with a late casual dinner at Le Safari in Nice, I had dinner there before and I still have dreams about their scallop risotto!

Thank you again!

Hi ann, we have styed there a few times as my anniversry and birthday presents. Never have been disappointed in the food. I usually order the tapas like dinner that comes in dozen little square dishes. Be sure to visit the Post office and go upstairs where the wlls ar covered with the famous who stayed ther. Yves Montand often played in the patanque(boules) court by the hotel. He and Simone Signoret married there.

Hello everybody, well I'm back and I wanted to thank you all because La Colombe D'or was one of the highlights of our trip! Just perfect! but then, we had a most perfect week.

Tower: We had a little giggle at the table about your comment, and mother said that her sole was artfully stripped also, and said to say that it was happily not her, thankfully!

Service was fab, as you said, natural with nothing forced in anybodys' manner, even though with the volume of the garden we noticed how tempers "may" flare in the kitchen. I love to see that though, as I am a hawk service nitpicker and watch everything. Service was as good as it gets, down to to fact that I picked a dish that I did not care for, my own fault totally - that I could not even touch and I can eat almost anything -(I had an awful feeling when I ordered but was kind of under a little stress being with my parents). My mother asked if the waiter was going to ask me what was wrong as I had not really touched the dish, but as he had already asked if everything was fine, I commented if he did -- it would be rather rude -- not a word! very professional.

Cing, we had the those tapas as the starter and we were all completely shocked! We were all full just from one order.

My parents are planning a trip back already and completely enjoyed their day.

The Princess Grace Expo is just so good and so complete, the three hours there we spent did not do it justice. It is a lovely day and very, very personal. I did not know Prince Rainer and Grace were so much in love and did my heart good to see the lovely notes they wrote eachother.

Great day, great week. Let me know if you want to know about the accomodations in Mas Pomona in Provence.... great!

Please tell us what that terrible dish was so we can avoid it.

Hi Underhill, well other people may like this but to me it was very unappealing. I ordered the rabbit, which I love, but was so flustered explaining the menu to mom and dad that I did not notice the style in which it was prepared. (Famous to the region I found out later). It was cooked in its own blood and there was LOTS of it. It just came to the table as a mound of black on a white plate.

I do not know why I couldn't manage it as I love black pudding (I forget the french name for that sausage) and I have no problem with squid ink or anything like that, but the rabbit in blood just "did me in".

It was, however, a great source of amusement, as if you have ever seen the Mr. Bean episode where he orders the steak tartare -- we were joking that I would be doing the same thing.

Everything else was lovely and I am sure many would find the rabbit very delicious - I think its their star dish!
