La Calcina payment

Hi all, this is my first post. Taking a cruise from Venice- Barcelona in Oct 2007, and just heard from La Calcina that they have a room available for the three days before our cruise starts, and I am thrilled as I've heard nothing but good about their place.
However, they want a check from my personal (Canadian) bank account in order to hold the rservation. This seems odd to me, I would think they wouldn't be able to cash any personal checks from US or Canada in Europe. I have emailed back asking for confirmation that a check is what they
want, shouldn't it be an international money order or credit card. In the meantime, I thought I'd ask what paymeny type othertravellers had used. Thanks.

Hi tropicalkerry

We are also booked at La Calcina (2nd time staying there) in September and yes they do want your personal cheque to hold your reservation.

Most places ask for your Visa but La Calcina obviously works differently and yes they can cash your cheque (ours too is on a Canadian bank) Don't worry they will reimburse you if you have to cancel - I haven't heard of any problems from other people who have booked here.

You will be very happy with La Calcina -we loved it the first time and are looking forward to our return visit for 4 days.

ira Jul 22nd, 2006 06:48 AM

Hi T,

They are holding your check in case you are a "no show".

When you check out, you will pay your full bill and they will return your check.

It is easier on you than sending Euro.

When we stayed there for three nights this past April, we too sent a personal check upon booking, for one night as requested, they had given us the USD amount. But upon check out we paid the balance due and did not get our check back. It had been deposited upon their receiving it.

nini Jul 22nd, 2006 07:25 AM

We stayed at La Calcina in April and also were less than happy to send the personal check. It will not be a problem as they credit it on your bill. We loved LC and absolutely would stay there again. The location, rooms, staff, breakfast will not disappoint. We stayed in the Iris Suite and it was so quiet and comfortable. Just outside the sitting room of the suite there is a bubbling fountain that you can hear all night.

tropicalkerry Jul 22nd, 2006 07:49 AM

thanks to all of you...I feel much better about sending a check now!

nessundorma Jul 22nd, 2006 08:55 AM

Just get travel insurance as well. Illness once forced me to cancel a trip to Venice, where I had booked into La Calcina. Needless to say, my deposit wasn't returned, even though my husband called from the hospital and put the doctor on the phone.

sfarah Jul 22nd, 2006 06:45 PM

I wonder if they only ask for the check deposit in high season? I stayed at La Calcina (loved it) in January 2005 and they only asked me for my credit card info. Furthermore the only charges made to my card were at checkout.

JaneRebecca Jul 22nd, 2006 09:21 PM

They requested a personal check from us for 2 of the 4 nights that we will be staying in the "Viola" apartment. I, too, thought it was strange but they assured me that they do this all the time and that we could pay the balance with a credit card or cash. They did not want a cashier's check or money order. It's been 18 days since I mailed the check and I have yet to hear from them with a confirmation.

carolsc Jul 23rd, 2006 04:07 AM

I sent a personal check for the deposit to them about 2 weeks ago. I got an email back yesterday that they'd received it and I could pay the balance when I arrive next May.

tropicalkerry Jul 23rd, 2006 07:17 AM

I wish I had specified in my original post that they want a check for THE FULL AMOUNT!, not just a deposit. We don't go till Oct 2007, and they want the check by end of Oct 2006. I would feel more comfortable if it was a deposit, I think. In Sept or Oct I will probably email again to ask why I am paying full amount rather than partial.

JaneRebecca Jul 23rd, 2006 01:31 PM

Dear TropicalKerry;

That would make me very uncomfortable! That's a long time from now and full payment to be paid a whole year beforehand is pretty pushy. I, personally, wouldn't do it. There are other wonderful hotels and apartments in Venice that only need a credit card to guarantee. No hotel is worth you feeling anxiety, imho.

Good luck with your planning, Jane

carolsc Jul 24th, 2006 03:44 AM

My deposit was for the first two of three total nights.

caroline_edinburgh Jul 24th, 2006 03:53 AM

Mine (in GBP) was for 3 out of 7 nights. I'm surprised they are asking you for the full amount - maybe they are getting more cancellations at short notice ? We didn't get the cheque back, just had it subtracted from our bill.

francophile03 Jul 24th, 2006 05:17 AM

I don't understand why hotels nowadays still want check deposits instead of the credit card account numbers to book a reservation. It would make me feel more anxious if the hotel asked for a check for not just the deposit but for the full amount of the stay. I hadn't heard about this before but I guess some hotels have this policy. Personally I would stay somewhere else just because I wouldn't want the stress of getting back the money if I had to cancel.

kappa Jul 24th, 2006 06:24 AM

I have never been asked for check by La Calcina (CC has always been enough) but this is an old story. Years ago, there was this same question. People wondered if La Calcina requests check only to North American cusotmers (I'm from CH) but obviously not reading some replies above. Most recently 2 weeks ago they asked for my CC detail again to confirm two rooms for this coming weekend (they had availability - 2 rooms but without canal view). There was the same discussion about Pensonne Accademia. Many had been requested a check deposit but not me (stayed there three times). Just curious about their policy.

JaneRebecca Jul 24th, 2006 08:45 AM

kappa;
Maybe because it is only 2 weeks before your stay that they only request a credit card. There's not enough time for a check or maybe it has something to do with the length of the stay?

I had sent our check 3 weeks ago and had heard nothing from them in confirmation. I wrote them yesterday asking about it and today heard back with a confirmation that they had received it. By the way, they had already cashed the check but had not sent me a confirmation.

The reason I chose them was because, for the time that we will be in Venice, all the hotels that we wanted (including La Calcina) were booked and I started sending reservation requests 51/2 months before our arrival. The apt.looks lovely and is in a nice neighborhood; a neighborhood which is highly regarded on this forum.

Normally, I wouldn't cave to a check request or a cancellation policy like theirs but I feel certain that there will be no problems and that their hospitality will make up for it. A little travel insurance wouldn't hurt either. I can't say that I am enjoying being dominated by them in this way but I think that once we are there we will be glad that we chose them.

kappa Jul 24th, 2006 09:04 AM

> Maybe because it is only 2 weeks before your stay that they only request a credit card.

Jane yes, but all the other times, I made reservation 4-5 months ahead.

Madison Jul 25th, 2006 02:22 PM

I will be in Venice the end of April 2007. I emailed the hotel yesterday with my requests and haven't heard back from them. Are they slow in answering emails. After much research this is the hotel I want to stay at. (La Calcina)

tropicalkerry Jul 25th, 2006 03:36 PM

Madison,

It took 2 days to hear back from them. I would be very interested in hearing what amount they want from you. I emailed and said I felt uncomfortable paying the full amount, and asked if I could pay half, and got an email back saying thanks for your reservation, so I will leave it till Oct to re-ask.

Madison Jul 25th, 2006 05:00 PM

As soon as I hear from them I will let you know how much they want upfront. I will be staying 3 nights.

It is strange. I am glad I came across your post. Since this is their protocol I guess I will have to accept it or find another hotel, but this is the hotel I want to stay at.

whitewoman Jul 25th, 2006 05:18 PM

We stayed at La Calcina and thought the rooms were overrated on this forum. The beds were extremely hard with pillows as flat as pancakes. The breakfast was the same each morning with the exception of some leftover cake from the previous night.
The only plus was the outdoor dining on the canal.

cherylforeurope Jul 25th, 2006 05:26 PM

I have reservations for June '07 and had to send a check for 3 nights (staying 4). We've decided not to go due to the temps at that time of year...so we'll see about my deposit!!

caroline_edinburgh Jul 26th, 2006 12:14 AM

"The breakfast was the same each morning" ???

I've stayed in hotels of all standards but never found one which offered different breakfast each day !

kappa Jul 26th, 2006 12:37 AM

I don't necessarily agree with whitewoman BUT I like that her post counter balances a bit all the other rave posts about this hotel. It's a small hotel and everybody cannot stay at this hotel after all.

Regarding their breakfast, I agree with Caroline's comment BUT by comparison, their breakfast was not as good as e.g. Pensione Accademia's but that was ok with me who am not a big breakfast eater. Also La Calcina's rooms are rustic (my impression is lots of bare wood) and not an elegant venetian room (e.g.tissue covered walls, etc) you might expect. I still think considering the very reasonable prices (for Venice), this hotel is of a great value.

tropicalkerry Jul 26th, 2006 04:29 AM

Madison,
I leave on vacation today, so won't be able to check this thread until after I return on Aug. 7th. I am most anxious to see what they tell you!

Peggyann Jul 26th, 2006 05:23 AM

When we sent off our personal check to them in the mail, I emailed them at the same time requesting that they email us back as soon as our check reached them. They did this. So when we arrived there, I had copies of all the emails verifying the amounts sent and that they had received our check. No problems.
We had originally booked three rooms, but actually needed only two in the end. When we cancelled the third room weeks before arrival, they emailed us asking if they could keep the deposit and apply it to our bill for the two rooms. All went fine.

We loved the location, the rooms were lovely and the staff was very helpful and made last minute reservations for us for the Secret Tour of Doges Palace. Hope your trip and cruise goes well.

monicapileggi Jul 26th, 2006 05:36 AM

Interesting. I stayed at La Calcina this past May for 5 nights. I was not asked to send any check but gave my credit card number to reserve the room. I paid in cash when I departed. It's interesting they are asking for a check.

I stayed in a single room, which was very comfortable for me. The room faced on the side canal, but I still had a nice view of the Giudecca canal. Their outdoor terrace was wonderful for breakfast. Loved the location and everyone was friendly and helpful, especially with booking restaurant reservations and giving me vaporetto times/schedules.

TropicalKerry - I promised to get back to you. I heard from La Calcina and I cannot even get a reservation for April/2007. They are booked. What a disappointment. It's funny because before I heard of this lovely hotel I was checking into booking in other hotels and they aren't even taking 2007 reservations yet. HOpe you are enjoying your vacation.

monicapileggi Jul 27th, 2006 04:27 AM

I contacted a couple of hotels in Rome for October 2007 and they're booked already!!

edhodge Jul 27th, 2006 06:29 AM

I booked months ago at La Calcina for our October '06 trip. They did request a check for 1 of the 2 nights. They did cash it already. We received confirmation of our reservation when they received the check.

Tra6 Jul 27th, 2006 06:39 AM

I also paid La Calcina in full in advance last summer through my travel agent.

Take_Me_Away Jul 27th, 2006 07:04 AM

I just booked this hotel for 6 nights in Oct 2007 and they are asking for a deposit to cover 4 nights. I feel alot better about sending it now that I see I'm not the only one.

plafield Jul 27th, 2006 09:58 AM

I just posted the same question before I found this thread. I have reserved at La Calcina for 4 nights in May 2007. They want a check for 3 nights by September. After reading this thread, I'm still unclear about their cancellation policy or if they even have one. I wrote to them to ask but have not heard. They seem be inconsistant in how they do this.

It's unhappy to hear that someone had a real emergency and that La Calcina would not refund the money sent. Our trip is 9 months away...anything could happen. After reading such rave reviews about the place, we were excited to go there. I'm not worried that they will try to claim not receiving our money, just that if an emergency happens we'd be out $779! that's 3 nights at 201 euros a night for the corner room w/ clear canal views.

JaneRebecca Jul 27th, 2006 10:53 AM

Plafield;
I believe it is a 20 day in advance of the arrival date cancellation policy. Here's what they said to me in their email and we arrive Oct.21:

"We would like to remind you of the conditions of our offer and repeat that you will lose your deposit only if you cancel this booking after 12.00 noon Italian time of 1st October 2006.
In case of departure earlier than agreed, we shall charge the total of the remaining stay".

And they mean business! (snicker!)
