La Calcina

Just got reservations for La Calcina the end of June. Have been assigned rooms 23 and room 25. One of the rooms has a view of the water. Anyone on the board stayed in either of these rooms or know what they are like? I feel luck to have gotten this reservation this late.

If this is the Hotel in Venice, here is a link to Tripadvisor reviews.

I *LOVE* that hotel and have stayed there twice. Once in a double with a canal view, and once in a single without. Both were fabulous. Sorry I don't remember my room number(s)!!

Secret tip: upon arrival make a reservation to use the private rooftop patio that they will set up for you.

As far as what the rooms are like... they are very nice. Lovely draperies, shutters, classic furniture, modern bathrooms. The view out over the canal was wonderful. But the smaller single with a view only of the building next door was actually very charming as well.

Have looked for the room numbers on the sites recommended and have not seen them. Did receive information from the hotel that we got a roon that is about 11 ft. square which is on the small side.

Did use all the recommendations on this board to make a decision to try for this hotel.

Still interested in knowing about the rooms if anyone has seen.

Thanks all!

Do you mean to say that the room is approx. 121 square feet, or 11 X 11 feet? This would seem to be about right for a small twin room.

The non-view room I had was just big enough for a double bed, and a writing desk and armoire, if I remember correct. Yes, it was very small.

But very pretty, I never thought about size being an issue.

I know I must have written down our room number. The rooms are small but the place is wonderful. We would def. stay there again.

Hi...I am considering staying at La Calcina for 3 nights early Oct. I will be alone. Can someone tell me how easy it is to get back and forth to San Marco Square...and if it is safe to do that alone at night. Thanks....

To get from La Calcina on the Zattere to San Marco, either walk over the Accademia Bridge and follow the signs to Piazza San Marco (about 10 - 15 minutes) or take a traghetto (gondola) across the Grand Canal from a spot between the Guggenheim Museum and the Accademia to a landing adjacent to San Marco.

I liked staying in Dorsoduro; it's quieter and less heavily touristed than around San Marco or the Rialto Bridge. But still pretty convenient. We gravitated to the Zattere to get away from people. (This visit was in early September.)

As for safety issues, I wasn't conscious of any problems, but wasn't really paying attention.

I think, but can't swear by it, that I stayed in Room 23 in 2001. I checked my notes, but didn't put down my room number. My husband and I stayed in a double room with a canal view and loved it. The room was comfortable, great bathroom, very airy & light, and faced the Guidecca Canal. I loved having breakfast on the deck several times, although the breakfast room is also charming.

I'm sure you will love it, no matter which rooms you have. I personally preferred La Calcina over the much-loved Accademia.

gerianne, I went solo my first trip to Venice, and stayed at La Calcina. I didn't go out at night much later than a stroll after dinner time, mostly because I was too tired, but honestly hadn't heard much about the nightlife. It is a fairly busy area and I would assume it to be safe, since there are usually people about. The walk is as described above, maybe 10-15 mins. over the Accademia bridge.

Thanks so much to those who responded to my question. Unfortunately, they are booked so I can't stay there! But I appreciate the help!

Am going to post a reply to my own message to help others who may have questions. Room 23 and 25 have pictures here to help in their choice. The smaller room basically has a view of the wall next door but if you peak around the corner you can see the picture of the canal in my picture.

Just wanted to say thanks for posting those pics... I just inquired with La Calcina for October availability!

suze Aug 8th, 2005 05:01 PM

Lucky you, enjoy! I love that hotel.

travelphile Aug 9th, 2005 10:07 AM

:( They are all booked. I said the Giorgione was my 2nd choice, but now I'm set on seeing water from my room! Back to researching... I have Pensione Accademia and Marconi in my head... I also know I bookmarked a few last fall when I began planning.

suze Aug 9th, 2005 11:53 AM

This is an absolutely untried suggestion but there's a hotel next to La Calcina. Maybe someone knows about it or check trip advisor?

www.pensioneseguso.it

It would share many of the positive factors of Calcina, location on the Guidecca, etc.

travelphile Aug 10th, 2005 05:48 PM

Thanks... started a new thread and getting a few other ideas... checking them all now!

For anyone's first trip to Venice, especially Accademia or Calcina in Dorsoduro neighborhood, my trip report back in March provides some details about water taxi, restaurants there.

Wondering how Brandsberg's trip in June was? See that there are pictures but, did you love Calcina and suggest it over all else in the area, hotel-wise?
