How easy is it to get here by public transport if we don't take a domestic flight.? Are there buses from Athens? Do the ferries from Piraeus go in May? Has anyone been?

Sometimes it takes many years for me to get to a particular destination and this is one in point.
Since I posted this there have been intermittent references to the Peleponnesus but now I think it may be on the radar.
Through this last year our Greek experts have said that you cannot take it for granted that the ferries which sailed last year will necessarily sail next year but on the other hand, what happened last year is the only indicator until next years timetables are printed.
Today I can see that there are ferries(and hydrofoils) to Kithira from Piraeus daily and from Gythion twice a week.
They seem to start from June although that may just be because I am looking at the timetable for June.
I'm thinking of going over Whitsun next year which is in May. Is the Piraeus ferry sufficiently essential so that is is likely to be sailing daily in May?

I'm not sure where you are getting your information, but gtp.gr is showing Vitsentzos Kornaros sailing only twice per week from Piraeus to Kythira, and there certainly won't be any hydrofoils. Openseas.gr also shows it sailing only on Wednesdays and Fridays in May 2013 (you can backtrack to previous dates on that website).

It is reasonable to assume there will be no daily ferries from Piraeus to Kythira in May 2014.

O.K. we're on for Kythira at the end or May. We'll hire a car from Athens and take two days to get to Neapoli.
We are now looking at where to stay in Kythira and the choice is between Aghia Pelagia and Kapsali. We want somewhere on the coast where there is a choice of tavernas.
Does anyone have any experience of either of these towns?

I can't find the city Kythira in my travel book. I also can't find Neapoli. Do you by any chance mean Nafplio? We were there a few months ago and loved it. There are a ton of great hotels, small inns, and B & B's in Nafplio. We stayed at Pension Marianna and it was reasonably priced and the owners were very accommodating and welcoming. Ask for a room with a view if you are interested.

If Kythira is an island (like I said I couldn't find it in my book). We stayed at a highly recommended island which is a short ferry ride (an hour or so) from the port of Athens and it runs regularly. It's called Hydra and there are no cars allowed on the island - it is very charming, clean and a wonderful place to get away from the hustle and bustle of Athens.

I went to Kythera a very long time ago, it is beautiful and relaxing. Kapsali was on the water and I do remember restaurants and taverns there. It was where the beaches were but the other. Aghia Pelagia looks promising also perhaps someone can weigh in who has been there more recently. I just wanted to weigh in on Kapsali, have a great time !!

Kythira and Neapoli do exist. Neapoli is in South Peloponnese and Kythira an Ionian island south of the Peloponnese.

A friend of mine has a holiday home near Kapsali and loves it. An other friend went on Kythira last August and rent a house outside Agia Pelagia so there is some infrastructure there too. I have no first hand info, but a very important note is that a car is an absolute must to move and explore around!

Thank you nanabee as even though you havent been there we are going to be staying in Nauplia on the way and so your recommendation is useful.
Mariha was it you who was corresponding with me when I was posting on the hurtigruten? Did you ever go?
