After living in Belgium and Germany for over 6 years, we learned to ignore the self-appointed beer snobs and drink whatever we like (as the Belgians do and Germans do). If Kwak is what you want, go for it. It's served in many places throughout Belgium. In Brussels, offhand I know you can get it at the Hotel Metropole's cafe and the Chaloupe d'Or on the Grand'Place, among dozens of others. (FYI, it's not served in wooden glass, but in a glass in a wooden frame [as noted above]--whether you take the glass off the frame to drink it or lift up the entire frame to drink is up to you--we've seen Belgians do it either way.)
We'lve also seen it served at several cafes in Brugge, but I can't remember the names offhand. One of them faces the Bruges brewery on the little square. I find fruity beers awful and if a man suggested I'd prefer those simply because I'm a woman, I'd raise my eyebrows. Anyway, I much prefer a crisp German or Austrian pilsener to Belgian beer, no matter how artisanal the brewer. |

You know what's worse? I live in beer country 'par excellence' and I don't drink beer. :o |
OK Jimmy, sorry, maybe that was a bit OTT. Still think it was a bit sexist though - even if it's true that many women might prefer fruit beers, you shouldn't make assumptions :-)
Actually I'm wearing Dr Marten shoes & have no children - does that give you a whole new stereotype ? :-) |
I'm afraid I was with Caroline when the 'fruity beer for the ladies' comment was made, but perhaps this is more a measure of our common experience. As a long time pint drinker, any man that suggests I should have a half gets a very short response!

Caroline: "If I was travelling with a man & he assumed I'd prefer a sweeter fruity beer, he'd be drinking on his own"
You are too easy going -- If that happened to me he'd be WEARING his beer :) |
Thanks for the support, Kate & Janis !

girl power, Caroline LOL

Miss Ziegfeld, do a google search for belgium beer, go to belgium for beer lovers and you can find info on Belgium pubs. Girardin may not be readily avalable but I would be surprised if you could not find it using that site.
