Kutna Hora
 

I'm planning on visiting Pargue in January and hope to visit the Church of bones in Sedlec.

Is Kutna Hora worthy of a longer visit?

Also, what about a town called Kolin? Anything of interest here to make the effort of getting off the train?

Other than the curiosity of visiting a town after which I was named Colin! ;)

I did not even go to see any church of bones because I'm not interested in such things, but fully enjoyed a day in Kutna Hora. It's a very pleasant and attractive city and historically important and has several sites worth touring (churches, as well as the Italian Court and Treasury, etc.). I believe it's a UNESCO site.

Why are you so interested in viewing bones of dead people?

I have visited Kutna Hora twice,it is a lovley little town and only an hour from Prague by train.
the main station in Kutna Hora is about 3 kilometers from the main town but there is a local train to take you nearer.
If you want to visit the Bone church at Sedlac just go out the main train staion to your right and walk to the main road ,you have to turn left on to it.walk along the main road passing a cigarette factory (Philip Morris I think) and you will come to a main crossroads with a large church on your left hand side.Take the junction to the right and about 150 meters up this road is the Bone church. Total walk is about 1 kilometer (10-12 minutes).Be aware it is often closed at lunchtime over the winter period.

The main town of Kutna Hora is a straight walk of 2 Kilometers (20-30 minutes) but there are local buses to get you there.there are yellow markings on the pavement showing you direction and distance.
In Kutna Hora itself is a wonderful Italian Court Building which you can arrange a tour of,there is a silvermine and museum and the lovely St Barbara's cathedral.There are some lovely little streets to walk along and some fine bars/resturants for a drink and a meal.
it is a place I would highly recommend.

go for a direct train ,they run about every hour ,take an hour and are very cheap,i think my last trip was about 115czk return and that was paying a little extra for first class.

I, too, would recommend a trip to Kutna Hora - an overnight would be ideal. Last time we stayed two nights and it was a little bit too much. The bone church was intriguing (I'm not morbid but it is something unique to see). I love history and find archaeology fascinating.

St. Barbara's is gorgeous (as noted above) and the town is pleasant for walking. Not the most quaint or charming town in the Czech Republic but still worth a visit.

Have not seen Kolin, unfortunately...

Not that you asked (!!) but my favourite towns there are Slavonice, Telc, Cesky Krumlov and the Cesky Raj area. Lots of very good proper castles, too.

I loved every minute of the Czech Republic. The trip out to Kutna Hora was the highlight. The Ossuary in Sedlec was incredible. I don't know why but I do have a morbid fascination about history. The Jewish Cemetary in Prague was equally as intuiging.

I did jump off the train at Kolin and you were right. Apart from a standard (attractive but not amazing) Czech small town square, the town is not much to write home about. I agree with you about the man with sausage. I shot him as well: http://www.jeremytaylor.eu/czech_food.htm

Colin, thanks for your great report. We are going to Prague in October and are staying in the same apartment, I think. The web shows it to have an elevator, so I was a little upset when you reported on all those stairs. Then I realized you went last year! Supposedly they have installed a lift. I sure hope so. It sounds like you enjoyed the apartment except for the stairs and washing machine incident. Did you ever figure out what happened there?

Anything you would care to comment on would be appreciated. Always like to hear from someone who has stayed in a place previously. Would you stay there again?

I've been away for a while and have just read your reply!

I would certainly stay in the same apartment again. It's location was superb, so central yet in a quiet area in the evening. We weren't kept awake by any late night revellers!

The washing machine incident was so embarassing! It must have had an uneven load which caused it to bounce its way free from its shackles and disconnect it from the water pipe!

The quality of the living space was top notch also. Huge flatscreen TV, free wi-fi internet.

If they've put in an elevator then that just make it the perfect apartment. I hope you have a fantastic time in Prague.
It's a great city.
