Krispy Kreme Tea?

According to new reports today, America's Krispy Kreme donut chain will open an outlet in Harrods and in 25 locations in the UK.

Is this a good thing?

Clifton Aug 5th, 2003 06:07 PM

Only if it gets some of those things out of the US!

Not a fan...

Jennie Aug 5th, 2003 06:50 PM

Clifton, Clifton, Clifton! Not a fan of Krispy Kreme?! Are you made of stone, man?! :) Krispy Kreme may just be the finest round, sweet, doughy concoction (more commonly known as the "donut") known to man!

Seriously, I really have no opinion on the whole "American chain restaurants going overseas" debate that tends to pup up now and then (the way I look at it, they wouldn't put 'em in if they didn't think people would use them!) but I will say that if they DO put one in London, you Brits will be in for a treat, IMHO. These things melt in your mouth! They are SO good!

Jennie :)

When we have visitors come see us from the UK, they love eating Krispy Kreme donuts! Can't get enough of them.

So Clifton, blame it on my friends. They probably pestered Krispy Kreme until the poor people capitulated and built one in the UK, just to feed their sugar habit. And they say we Americans have a sweet tooth? I think not.

When friends from Edinburgh came to visit two years ago they went crazy over fresh-from-the-oven Krispy Kremes. When I next visited them, they warned me that they wouldn't let me in the door without the donuts. I was spending several days in London first so I couldn't bring them and--lucky for me--they forgave me :)

Several months ago they looked into opening a franchise in Edinburgh, but KK wants to you sign over your first born and show credit of over $1m so it was a no go.

They'll be SO glad to hear these goodies are on their way!

I'm with clifton, I go crazy over good
sorbets or ice cream, so not really a put-down.

I think it's a conspiracy to make the rest of the world obese like Americans. I'm disappointed that Harrods is downscaling it's image with Krispy Kreme which is just a few steps up from McDonalds. They sure taste good though.

flanneruk Aug 5th, 2003 10:52 PM

Don't waste energy complaining or triumphalising.

The list of US junk franchises that have proudly announced plans to open five million branches in the UK, and five years later give up after opening two and screwing up is about as long as - well the amount of litter the average McD generates.

Wendy's have tried and failed at least twice. Arby's. Dunkin' Donuts. 7-11.

All martyrs to the two laws of British fast food:
- Just being horrible doesn't guarantee success in the UK. Our taste in horrible food is different from yours.
- However vile the US product, we'll find a way of doing it nastier and cheaper.

Is Harrods A new Branch of WalMart Now ! I think this is a bad location the other 25 units will do well but the Harrods will Fail!

Fantastic news!! I was in the States earlier this year and got addicted to Krispy Kreme donuts!!

Time to start planning my Krispy Kreme diet, I think.

kaudrey Aug 6th, 2003 04:01 AM

Well, melr, the good (?) news is that with that kind of diet, you won't have to be on it long. Your arteries will clog fast, with the obvious result, then - no more diet! :) I never touch the stuff.

KidsToLondon - I think it's not a good match in Harrods at all (for Harrods' image, at the very least), but with all the tourists who go there, I'm not surprised.

flanneruk - LOL! :D

Odd, but I posted a reply last night but can't see it on the thread today, although I can see posts before and after it. But, if I click respond, I can read my response on the screen, next to the text box I'm typing in.

I think the Krispy Kremes are making me go blind!

LeCanard Aug 6th, 2003 04:22 AM

Harrods has been downscaling its image for years.
And ... what's Krispy Kreme Tea?
We had some dunkin donuts in Rome, but they have lasted only for 3 or 4 years.

sandi Aug 6th, 2003 04:33 AM

They can have the Krispy Kremes in the UK. Hate them!

ncgrrl Aug 6th, 2003 06:43 AM

Why is it everywhere else in the world has a Krispy Kreme except Durham NC. Durham is about 90 miles (about 150 km) from the home of Krispy Kreme in Winston-Salem, NC and we can't get hot donuts now.

By the way, you only want them hot, do not buy the box at the grocery store. It's not the same.

Intrepid Aug 6th, 2003 07:02 AM

To go back to the original question (not that anybody cares at this point!!!LOL)but I suppose it IS a "good thing" if the things sell and make money for the store. I hope noone was under the mistaken impression that the decision to sell or not sell them involved much more than that.

rex Aug 6th, 2003 07:36 AM

I am not a fan of Krispy Kreme fan either - - but in reference to the phrase "fresh from the oven" - - do any glazed donuts get prepared in an oven? I thought that all donuts come from a deep fat fryer.

Best wishes,

Rex

AllyPally Aug 6th, 2003 07:48 AM

Could someone explain what these donuts are all about? As a Londoner (ex North American), I have learned to go without Dunkin Donuts. I will make a special trip to Harrods to try them out.

And for anyone who thinks Harrods is high class, have you seen the so-called Diana Memorial lately??? It's really bad but should be at the top of anyone's sightseeing list!!

I just received an e-mail update from Better Baking, and there's a recipe for Krispy Kreme doughnuts this month. Check it out at betterbaking.com. Marcy Goldman's recipe for Montreal bagels is the next best thing to being there, so I'm sure these will taste like the real thing (if that's what you want). And yes, they are deep-fried. The company might find success in Scotland, the home of the deep-fried Mars bar.

FainaAgain Aug 6th, 2003 08:49 AM

I prefer any other type of doughtnuts, not the Kremes, but you never know until you try. To me they taste like clay, but my children love them and buy by boxes.
