Krakow, Budapest, Czech., Austria Itinerary
 

Would you take a look at this itinerary. I have one spare day (could have another)and want feedback as to where to use it.(this is a good problem)The trip begins May 1 and ends May 31
Day 1 arrive in Krakow at 9:55 AM- visit Salt mines
Day 2 Auschwitz
Day 3 Warwell Hill, Oskar Schindler Factory
Day 4 maybe Jewish ghetto or try to get to Zalipic (overnite train to Budapest, depart @21:54
Day 5 -arv @ 8::35 AM, Budapest
Day 6 Budapest
DAy 7 -Budapest
Day 8 Budapest
Day 9 To Prague via train @9:25, arv 4:15
Day 10,11,12- Prague
Day 13 rent a car and drive to Telc. Telc Castle I am thinking of not making lodging reservations for the next few days but instead finding a pension
Day 14- maybe drive to Znojmo (or other ideas are welcome here)
Day 15- to Hluboka Castle then to Cesky Budejovice
Day 16-CK, castle, abbey
Day 17- to Vienna via shuttle arv Vienna @noon
Day-18,19,20- Vienna
Day 21-To Durnstein, stop at Korneuburg (thinking of doing these next days till Salzburg without a reservation)
Day22- Melk Abbey, boat/bike ride
Day 23 no plans, maybe Durnstein again. any ideas here???
Day 24- to Halstatt
DAy 25 Grossglockner Rd (probably overnite in Halstatt
DAy 26- EaglesNest tour and area and then drop car in Salzburg
Day 27 Salzburg
Day 28 Salzburg
Day 29 to Munich in the morning for a 2:05 fight
Day 30- Another free day that I can put anywhere in the above itinerary
So, I have one free day at the end that I would like to put somewhere else other than Salzburg. Do I need that other day in Durnstein (Day 23) If so, what other area might I explore there or should I move on down the road.I could give up one day in Krakow if need be. I probabay am not interested in Germany as we are going there in November for the Christmas markets (sort of a last minute plan).

I see that you are planning to take the overnight train from Krakow to Budapest.
Make sure that you book a first class berth. And I hope you get more sleep than I. The train stops a lot and there is bumping when the cars are switched.
Cannot help with the rest of your plans. Just wanted to give you some advice about the overnight.

Krakow - you should do the Krakow Under the Occupation Museum and the Jewish Ghetto on the same day - also Podgorze.

Wawel requires timed tickets which sell out early. Or you can reserve tickets for future days for a small fee.

Definitely see the salt mine - it was great. They are open late so you can walk around Krakow when you arrive and then go late.

Telc and area - easy to find pensions as you go but I don't think there is much outside of Telc. You probably would need to speak Czech to find pensions in the countryside. The TI there will help you get a room in town and possibly in the area.

Sounds like a great trip!

Maybe another day in Vienna? Or a day in Munich?

A couple of suggestions:

Put the proper tags on your posts. You only have Austria for this post and for your Krakow lodging post you used Czech Republic. This helps everyone on the board when looking for posts by country.

Clean up the itinerary. I would have given more information but this itinerary is too messy to easily read (I couldn't get past Krakow). Combine your days (Budapest, Salzburg) and put an extra line (enter, enter) between different cities to make for easier reading.

You'll get better responses if your itinerary is easier to read and if you tag by country since many people look for posts that way.

Tidy, we just returned from a week in Krakow (as in, our flight home was last night) and so I'll share my fresh observations with you.

Salt Mines. It's definitely worth fitting on your agenda. We booked a tour through the "See Krakow" group and felt it was worth the money. The tour arranges for transport and tickets, as well as the mine guide. If you go as an individual you'll have to wait until there are sufficient people to form a group. Another advantage of being in a group is that after the 2.5 hour mine tour, our group was able to queue immediately for the lift to the surface. The total touring time was about 4 hours.

Auschwitz. We toured without a group and were able to catch a convenient group tour time when we arrived (that's the only way to tour during high season). Touring both Auschwitz and Birkenau took pretty much the entire day, including the drive to and from Krakow.

Wawel Hill. We spent the majority of a day touring the castle area, breaking for lunch and then returning based on our timed entry tickets. I would suggest getting your tickets first, then mapping your agenda that way. I think adding Shindler's Factory would make for a very long day. We included that with our day in the Jewish Quarter and felt that worked well.
