Konstanz to Garmisch Partenkirchen

Hello,
We will be travelling from Konstanz to Garmisch Partenkirchen on 5 May by train. Please could you advise us on the most scenic train route for that time of year. We don't mind about the length of time on the train as we really enjoy train travel. We have the whole day to get there. Not sure if we should but tickets through Innsbruck or if we should just go with the Munich connection.
Thank you for your help.

Hi jinx,

I think you know I live in Garmisch, and I travel often to Switzerland.

Yes, the route via Innsbruck is more scenic -- you pass through Tyrolian Alpine villages with brown-wood chalets and alongside streams. Far prefer it.

Sometimes the DB doesn't list those routes (I was just looking for a trip of mine later this year, and it always put me on a bus between Munich and Zürich). And it won't let you buy tickets if you force the route.

For that reason, it's best to use the Austrian train site, if you don't already do that, at www.oebb,at. They won't be able to sell you the portion between Innsbruck and Garmisch, but you can just get a Werdenfels Ticket + Innsbruck for that portion.

Have fun as you plan!

Hello Swandiv, I was hoping you would reply. Thank you for the advice. Now I understand why I couldn't get the Innsbruck connection to work. I appreciate all your advice over the years.

Oops! I made an error here.

I was looking for fares from Garmisch to Switzerland; with neither start nor destination in Germany, the DB would not sell the ticket.

But from Konstanz to Garmisch, or even to Innsbruck if you have to do that, the DB will sell it because one end is in Germany.

Sorry for the error!

What about:
Konstanz dp 9.40 by Lake Constance boat with board restaurant - Lindau im Bodensee ar 12.50, dp by train 13.58 - Kempten 15.14/15.34 - Reutte in Tirol 16.50/16.57 - Garmisch-Partenkirchen ar 17.57.
or
Konstanz dp 9.40 by Lake Constance boat with board restaurant - Bregenz ar 13.22, dp by train 14.04 - Imst-Pitztal ar 16.18, dp by bus 17.48 - Nassereith 18.23/18.25 - Ehrwald ar 18.55, dp by train 18.57 - Garmisch-Paretnkirchen ar 19.29

Excellent options, neckervd! I would go for the first one as the bus over Fernpass (Nassereith) is often late and the OP might miss the train in Ehrwald.

This is really awesome advice thank you so much.

...the next Garmisch bound train would leave Ehrwald at 19.30.
