Any information on Koblenz please

Are you wanting hotel information or sightseeing? I stayed at a 3 star in Koblenz several years ago - Hotel Simonis.

A good place to base oneself if visiting the Rhine and Mosel by train, especially in winter, when the smaller towns are dead. A pleasant small city, but not especially destination-worthy in and of itself.

Yes not a destination but a good Rhine base and a pleasant city. Unique location at confluence of Rhine and Mosel, two legendary German rivers - Mother Mosel and the Father Rhine. At the confluence is a famous statue to German Unity - the statue once held aloft a statue of Kaiser Wilhelm but was blown to bits by Americans firing for fun from across the river in waning days of WWII. Nice river front but city was largely destroyed in WWII so lacks real warmth.

We stopped off at Koblenz on the way to St Goar - here is my comment from trip report:
KOBLENZ - we decided to get off the train in Koblenz since we had to make a transfer anyway to reach St Goar. We liked the old-town area of Koblenz, with all the statues around every corner, pretty squares; a nicely retained ambience. We had a light lunch of sausage/potato salad or frites and a nice white Rhine wine (are there any bad ones?) for around 15 Euro. We visited the <b>Church of Our Lady</b>, saw the <b>Four Towers</b> at the intersection of Markt and Lohrstrasse, and found the <b>face of Hygea</b> as well as the <b>Schaengel &quot;spitting-boy&quot; fountain</b>. Oh, but the best find of all was the 3 scoops of gelati we bought for 2 Euro at a store called Ge Latt I. I now fully understand why everyone loves good gelati ? it was wonderful. I recall that the shop is located on a street leading off the <b>Jesuitplatz</b>, maybe Firmungstrasse?

Rydertodwick: PalQ andT travelnut have pretty well covered it. The old town has some charm, especially the squares and the statuary as noted. A stroll along the water front on the Rhine side is beautiful. Many mansions and beautiful gardens. As you approach the &quot;confluence&quot;, you will find a number of riverside restaurants with broad, expansive terraces overlooking the river.
Take a trip up to the fort which you can see on the hill from the city below and across the river. You go up by two person ski lifts (essentially, a board with a cable strung through the center). Exciting! The views from the fort are awesome. You can actually see the two rivers connecting. The fort itself has some interesting displays and the ramparts are interesting as well.
It was an one day stop over for us and we enjoyed it. Have a great trip.

I must go again and see whether I change my mind, but to me Koblenz is the one dull place on that part of the Rhine. It is larger than towns to the south, so you walk further and see less of the river. The Prussians built there a lot, so even on the riverside you have Prussian buildings, heavy and grey like old Berlin. I should advise people to settle in Boppard or Bingen, and run up and down the river by boat where they exist and buy local train, along either bank. There are boats even in winter on the finest stretches, Boppard, St Goarshausen, and St Goar, and St Goarshausen, St Goar, Kaub, Bingen, and Rudesheim, but you do need to wrap up well.

But tastes differ, and many here will not agree with me.
