Consider Kilrush,a small heritage town in County Clare and less than an hour`s drive from Shannon.I liked the trip to Scattery Island,2 miles offshore which was a flourishing monastic site but is now abandoned.Very peaceful.There is an Interpretation Centre near the Ferry at the Marina.You can choose a trip to see dolphins too or visit Loop Head or Kilkee.

A boat to Scattery Island goes frequently from the marina in Kilrush.Lots of data on the island in google.com

We are planning on staying in Killaloe on our last night. It is on the Shannon in County Clare. I believe it is less than an hour to the airport from there.<BR><BR>Don't know yet how charming it will be but have heard good things about it from friends.
