KLM or Delta

Which airline would you recommend flying to Amsterdam. Thanks.

Don't know where you are starting from, but we flew KLM from L.A. to Amsterdam a few years back on one of their 747's and loved it.

I flew KLM from Detroit to Amsterdam last year and enjoyed my flight as much as it's possible to enjoy a longish flight! :-)

I have never flown Delta to Europe iris, but I have never had a pleasant flight on Delta domestically.

I like KLM, so that is the airline I use. But checking the website wombat gave you is a very good idea.

We too flew KLM from Detroit to Amsterdam last year and everything went very smoothly. I wouldn't hesitate to fly them again.

I was on four intra- European flights on KLM last year and hated them all. Most inedible food I have ever had on an airplane. Annoyingly long check-in procedure and not much friendliness in cabin service.
I don't know the state of affairs on their longhaul transatlantic routes, but I will gladly shy away from booking them.

hsv, I'm surprised by your food experience. we flew KLM from Amsterdam to Nuremburg and were served delicious sandwiches made with wonderful dutch cheese on fresh whole grain bread. We were both surprised to receive food at all, and were even more surprised by the quality.

Your departure point makes a difference in the equipment that will be used. We flew KLM R/T Washington, D.C. to Amsterdam last fall. The equipment there was the airbus 300. Check in was fine and the food was OK going out and excellent coming back. The airbus 300 was new both ways and had the individual entertainment screens. Going out I hated it becuase I wanted to sleep and the electronics box for the screens took up much valuable footroom. On the way back I enjoyed the individual entertainment option and the flight was not as crowded. We had an ongoing flight from Amsterdam to Prague on the Czech airline partnering with KLM. On the return Prague to Amsterdam we found on trying to check in that KLM failed to manifest us for that flight although our itinerary printout was in order. It took a lot of running around Prague airport to get things in order and make our flight.

Tracy,

maybe one cannot argue about taste :-)!

I got sandwiches, too, but I thought they were revolting. No whole grain bread, though. Rather some soft and sweet dough in combination with some ham and an obscure smear on them - just thinking about them makes me shiver. And I am usually not one to complain about airline food in general.

I wasn't too thrilled on one flight with them not honouring my business class tickets and setting me up in the far rear of the plane, too. But then apparently they had overbooked and I was glad to be on my way back home at all.

You paid for business and they put you in economy? Didn't they compensate you big time for that?

ilovetotravel29 Jul 19th, 2006 12:35 PM

I loved flying on KLM from detroit to Paris.....the ride was great, the service wonderful, and the pilot always kept us informed about the turbulence...it was wonderful!

tcreath Jul 19th, 2006 12:46 PM

Well HSV, I do recall being on quite an ambien-enduced high that day so maybe I just thought they were delicious because I was so tired? ;)

hsv Jul 19th, 2006 12:53 PM

KT,

yes, there was some compensation - but what good does it do me, if it's not a privately paid for ticket?

hsv Jul 19th, 2006 12:55 PM

Tracy,

I guess perspectives do change at times depending on one's personal state. Let's credit KLM in your instance to have served delicious sandwiches, though. In dubio pro reo sort of thing :-).

i'd recommend klm. we fly back and forth to europe regularly, and klm through amsterdam is our airline of choice. they are very reliable and we have never had a problem with them. since amsterdam is klm's primary hub, i would guess you would be able to get a better fare with them than delta.
i hate flying on delta. everytime i do there is a connection problem or some other major inconvience.

as for food, we started bringing our own several years ago no matter which airlines we fly.

ilovetotravel29 Jul 19th, 2006 01:06 PM

KLM food was very good, both coming and going. Though british airways was better....actually had salmon and mashed potatoes!! yummy!

but KLM did a good job as well...food was definately more american on my way to Paris, and definately more Parisian on my way back.

Ayyyee! I want to escape to Paris!

Thank you everyone for your answers. We finally booked a 777 KLM. Does any one know if that has individual screens, do you pay for movies, etc. When you call they said they don'[t know. Thanks again.

rkkwan Jul 20th, 2006 10:08 AM

KLM's 777 is very new and have the latest audio/video on-demand (AVOD) with individual screens, even in economy.

Yes, free headsets and, I believe, free alcoholic drinks.

BudTx Jul 20th, 2006 10:16 AM

I flew KLM to Amsterdam and thought it was great. The meals and beverages were enjoyable.
