KLM- airline

Hoping that someone can help me with this one.Called KLM to determine maximum size of carry-on luggage allowed on the plane, as I would prefer to bring my backpack on board with me. Recieved useless info..... can anyone help?

Here is a direct quote (almost) from the KLM Webpage that pertains to baggage allowances for economy class passengers.
One piece of cabin baggage is allowed. The maximum dimensions of which must not exceed 55 x 35 x 25 cm. Maximum
weight: 10 kg. An overcoat/wrap/blanket,
umbrella/walking stick, handbag/purse,
a reasonable amount of reading matter.

55 cm converts I believe to about 22 inches.
35 to 14 inches and
25 to 10 inches.
So it adds up to 46 inches total dimensions for length, height and depth.
I would cut it to 44 just to be safe.
But when we flew KLM, I had a reasonable looking piece and no one put it through the hopper to check the size. I think if you show up with a 5,600 cubic inch pack, someone is going to question it.

Those dimensions are almost correct except that the 10" should be 9" for a total of 45". Last year I had to board KLM in Paris & they wouldn't let me carry on the piece even though it was within limits. Also, KLM's weight restriction for a carryon is 22 pounds, not the usual 45 pounds as with other airlines.

When I flew on KLM from Amsterdam to San Francisco, the size of the bag AND the weight of the bag made a difference. The airline had "luggage police" who went around and measured and weighed bags before we even checked in.

On many European airlines, their carry-on luggage weight allowances fall as low as 6 kilos (about 13 pounds) and they generally only allow one carry-on per person. I just came back from England last week and Virgin Atlantic only permits one carry-on which weighs no more than 6 kilos.

I wouldn't count on being able to bring a large bag as a carry-on.

Some smart soul on this forum suggested packing a lightweight nylon bag inside your carryon just in case the luggage police say no and you have to remove breakables/medicine/camera etc. from the first bag. What a pain they've become. Pretty soon we'll be subject to weight restrictions--or, maybe that's not a bad idea!

My personal advice about KLM, they suck, don't fly them if you have a chance not to, use someone else, I have had repeated problems with them, and they have the absolute worst flight attendents EVER.....
