Please could anyone give me more information about the Kleine Scheidegg hike? We are staying in Lauterbrunen and are interested in a moderate hike. Thank you.

I'm not sure what kind of information I need. We have never been to this area and want to experience a hike in the Alps. Where should we begin? Any tips to make it easier? Any suggestions would be helpful - thanks.

To do this hike, buy a ticket to Lauterbrunnen-Mannlichen with a return Wengenalp-Lauterbrunnen. This involves a train to Wengen, and a gondola from Wengen to Mannlichen, followed by the hike to Kleine Sheidegg. Strictly speaking you could catch the train back in Kleine Sheidegg but it's all downhill from here to Wengenalp, and the walk is lovely. (It's the walk from Wengenalp to Wengen and onward that is really steep and hard on the knees.) Catch your train back to Lauterbrunnen in Wengenalp.

Assuming you catch the train to Wengen at time t = 0, you'd be back around 4 to 6 hours later, depending on how fast you walk, how fast you make your train connections, how much gawking and photo-taking you do, how long you spend at lunch, etc.

The walk is easy and lovely, as tvlgrl said.

From Lauterbrunnen you can take a train to Wengen, then the cable car to Mannlichen. At the time of our visit, the Mannlichen fare was 15.80 CHF each after 25% Swiss pass discount. There’s an easy, scenic path from Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidegg which takes about an hour.

Once in Kleine Scheidegg, you might want to have lunch or a beverage - there's a restaurant with tables outdoors, perfect on a nice day. Awesome views. The restaurant has an outdoor grill, where you can watch the cooks prepare bratwurst, rosti, sauerkraut and other local specialties.

You can then either take the train back to Wengen or Lauterbrunnen or opt to hike, but beware - this is a steep decent and hard on the knees.

Another option is to take the funicular from Lauterbrunnen up to Grutschalp and hike to Murren. That's a fairly level hike that suppossedly takes about an hour and a quarter (if you don't stop to take a zillion photos and have a picnic). Murrren is a cute little town where you could have lunch. From there you can either hike on to Gimmelwald (30 minutes easy downhill hike) or take the cable car back down to the valley floor. If you did go on to Murren you would take the same cable car down from there. That cable car ride is a lot of fun. And once on the valley floor you can take a bus back to Lauterbrunnen or walk as it is totally flat.

I was just there a week ago and we intended to do the Mannlichen - KS hike but there was quite a lot of cloud cover and Mannlichen was always in the clouds, which would have made that hike pretty boring. The Murren hike gives views across the valley to Wengen, and down the cliff into the valley floor, so even when the big peaks are in the clouds, it's still pretty.
