Kirkcudbright, Scotland?
 

From what I read about Kirkcudbright it is an interesting place to visit.
My problem is that it will be the 3rd week in Oct. when I could be there. Is there much to see or do at that time of the year?

I thought I might get in ahead of Danna, who will no doubt strike me down:)

Kirkcudbright is an OK place with dozens of other OK places in Scotland. It would never be at the top of my hit parade, however.

What do you see from your visit and how long will it last?

I will have from Mon. through Fri. noon to see some of Scotland. I was looking for things south of the Edinburgh/Glasgow line.

It would be worth an overnight stay on a Borders/Dumfries and Galloway tour.

Sorry to be a wet balnket. One thing taht will be getting god, is theh geese.

The Solway flats are winter roosts for hundreds of thousands of geese, which are a sight to behold.

The RSPB has a reserve at Mersehead, and one at Loch Ken and one at Wood of Cree, and the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust have one nearby at Caerlaverock

I happen to like Kirkudbright (probably more than Sheila) but I tend to agree that with limited time, in late October, that there might well be better choices.

One thing to note is that the west side of the island gets significantly more precipitation, thus staying on the east side might offer more chances for productive days which will, BTW, be getting quite short.

Not south of Edinburgh/Glasgow, but you might think about Fife; the East Neuk villages (Crail et al), St Andrews and the Fife landscape are very attractive and not terribly inconvenient from Edinburgh.

Or have a look at a little bit of non-Scotland thrown in - visit East Lothian and the seaside towns east and south of Edinburgh, then cross the border and visit some of the very nice villages in the northern part of Northumberland - Berwick, Holy Isle, Bamburgh, Alnwick - great castles, scenery, well worth visiting. Return to Edinburgh (if that's your plan) via the Tweed valley and some of the various Borders towns, or back across the Lammermuir Hills. A fine autumn route.
