Killarney Hostel?
Has anyone stayed at the Railway Hostel in Killarney?
|
Yep, I have, about two and a half years ago. Did you have any particular questions about it?
|
Yeah, did you like it ok? Is it clean? Are the staff helpful? My wife and I will be going en suite? Is that what you did?

We had an ensuite twin room. It was fine - it's a hostel, so no lap of luxury, but I don't remember any issues with cleanliness or anything else. The staff was good as well (or at least, the one guy we interacted with). We didn't use the common facilities, but I think they had a large dining/TV room that looked pretty nice. They did have a continental breakfast, but I think it was basically bread and jam. It's walking distance to town, which was nice, and had a parking lot.
I will say that if I had it to do over again, and was renting a car and therefore had the flexibility to stay wherever I liked, I'd stay in Kenmare over Killarney. If you're staying in a hostel, I assume you're on a pretty tight budget, and we had trouble finding things to eat in Killarney that were in our price range (especially for dinner). We ended up eating chicken nuggets in a random restaurant one night, I *think* on Main Street, and then generic fast food the next night. We just did a day trip to Kenmare, but it looked like there might be more options there, and it just seemed like a better place to stay regardless. Now, all that's two years ago, so maybe prices have gone down in response to the economy or something, but that was our experience. Killarney was small and very geared toward tourists. Kenmare seemed like more of a town. |
I stayed there this summer and yes, it was clean. I stayed in a four bedroom ensuite and it actually had room to move which was nice. The staff was helpful when I asked questions and they did my laundry for me (for a fee of course, but still nice to not have to sit and wait). It is really close to everything in the town as well. I ate out in Killarney one night and it wasn't cheap, but I kind of found that anywhere in Ireland which was why I usually made my own food in the hostels.

I stayed 2 years ago, I think 3 days in an 8 bedroom en suite dorme, and then they upgraded me in for 3 days in a twin private ensuite due to some maintenace problem on the original room. Clean and public areas quite spacy, but there don't seem to be any lockers where you can lock your luggage in, only a room near reception you can leave your stuff in and collect it later after check out. When I was there it was middle March, so very quiet, I don't know how are things in high season. They could still book you some excursions with a local office, and they did picking you up from the hostel. In general a pleasant place. My only problem was that in the dorms, they had some very small beds, I am 1.84 metres tall and half my legs were hugging out! Not very comfortable!
