Kilkenny

OK...you guys did a great job at steering me to a wonderful sounding B&B in Dingle, now how about Kilkenny? I now it's a much different town and have heard that location near the city center is important because of the driving. Any suggestions?

Although it is not right in town, we stayed at Breagagh View and loved it. We did end up taking the car into town but it was not a problem.

Celtic House, 5 minutes to the castle, off street parking, quiet location across from a church school.

Another vote for Celtic House.

I recently read some not-so-great reviews for Celtic House on tripadvisor, but we stayed there recently and thought it was fine. We did notice a little noise during the night, but it wasn't a big deal. Re lack of hairdryer (one comment on tripadvisor was lack of hairdryer), we asked for one and they provided it.

Our favorite place in Kilkenny (the only place we have stayed!) is Dunromin B&B. It is a little walk from the center of town, but having Val as a homeowner is worth it!!

Breagagh View was for sale in September when I was there. Best not to stay at a place that is for sale. They won't care about repeat business.

Happy to report that Braeagagh View Bed and Breakfast in Kilkenny was sold to the lovely Kinsella family. Our family of 5 members had the good fortune to experience their warm hospitality on on 3 night stay in July.
They made us feel at home and catered to our every need. The rooms were lovely and spacious - the tradional Irish breakfast delicious!!! We wish this lovely family the best of luck!
We will return one day!!

Thanks for the good news that Breagagh View will continue as a B&B. All too many that are being sold now are turning into private homes.

Whew-a relief about Bregagh House, since I'm supposedly booked there for 2 nights this fall! Though I did check that kschwein doesn't have any other posts on this site...maybe a plant from the B&B?! ;) Hopefully just someone new! I'll let you all know about Bregagh in a couple months!

kschwein Jul 26th, 2006 04:22 PM

Hi! This is Kate Schweinfurth from Columbia, Maryland - we truly did have a lovely time at the Braeagagh View. I'll ask my brother, Frank Gilligan of Dallas Texas to add his two cents. We had first booked reservations at the Auburndale BnB, but they inadvertently (?) overlooked jotting our names down in the book. The Braeagagh welcomed us with open arms. Let us know what you think when you visit in the fall! Ireland is beautiful - 40 shades of green! Happy trails!

chemgirl Jul 27th, 2006 04:41 AM

Hi Kate-ok, you're legit. ;) Though on closer examination I'm staying at Bregah House on Dean St., not Bregagh View, so I guess it didn't apply to me anyway. (How do you make a sheepish face?)

kschwein Jul 27th, 2006 08:00 AM

Opps! I'm glad we're on the same page now! Hope your visit to Ireland is lovely - and that your stay at Braeagagh HOUSE compares with our stay at BRAEAGAGH VIEW!!! Confirm and then re-confirm your reservations so you won't come up against what happened to us at the Auburndale BnB! Braeagagh VIEW calmed our ruffled feathers and made all the aggravation worthwhile!
We did not come out on the short end of the stick!!
Take care and happy travels!

Anyone looking for a wonderful Bnb in Killarney? Call the CRYSTAL SPRINGS BnB (on the River Flesk)...walking distance to Town! Innkeeper Eileen is gracious and serves a fantastic breakfast...you have to try her Porridge...laced with Baily's Irish Creame...to die for!!!! Rooms are lovely!

Laoghaire Jul 27th, 2006 11:43 AM

kschwein...Hi Kate, am interested in Crystal Springs in Killarney. We are going to Ireland next May/June, and I am seriously thinking of booking this BandB. Do the rooms have a sitting area, or at least have a couple comfy chairs? Planning on three nights,so any info would be appreciated. Thanks...Helen

IrishEyes Jul 27th, 2006 12:49 PM

Helen,

I highly recommend Earl's Court in Killarney. Their rooms are very large with sitting areas and comfy chairs. Real clean, big bathrooms, delish breakfast, free internet. First class in every way. Short walk to town.

There is a photo posted on another Ireland travel forum under trip reports.

Thanks IrishEyes...Will look into Earl's Court. We really enjoy a larger room to relax in..Helen

Has anyone ever stayed at the Hibernian in Kilkenny? I don't think it's considered a BnB, but it's supposed to be very centrally located.

We stayed at the Bregagh House on Dean St. across from St. Canice's Cathedral last October. Here is an excerpt from my trip report about it.

"BREGAGH HOUSE B&B -35E Per person
Greeted by owner at arrival as well as breakfast. Very willing to direct you to what you seek and a nice map and what to do listings in room. Small room, good bathroom and shower, extremely clean, parking available. Breakfast servings a little sparse and the sideboard offerings a little slim. I would stay again and rate this with a 3 of 5 stars."

In retrospect, I think I would give them 3.5 stars, because even though it wasn't alot of food, it was plain good fare. It was also nice and quiet and the Brennan's were kind enough to let us leave our car in their carpark after checkout while we explored on foot.

It was within walking distance of City Centre and although Kilkenny Castle was on the other side of town, we still felt that it was an easy walk. (15/20 minutes). Certainly a great value for price.
Good luck, let us know how it turns out.
