Kilbrittain Castle
Has anyone stayed here and if so any comments?
|
Stayed there with our two kids a couple years ago. VERY cool. The ground floor of the castle is mind-bogglingly old (early 12th century, as I recall). The upper floor (the actual living space) is more like 18th century. There is an attached wing that was a victorian manor house before it was burned by the IRA during the rebellion (now it's a scenic ruin).
Pleasant owners and staff, good rooms (we had a very big 4-person "family room"), interesting grounds, and a nice little town. An easy drive to Kinsale. Expensive by B&B standards, but a worthwhile splurge.

My daughter and her friend wanted to stay at a castle but most were extremely expensive..found this one and it was the highlight of their trip...it was around $114 in US dollars including breakfast..
It is run by Sylvia and Tim Cahill-O'brien...he made a special trip to come pick up my daughter and her friend at a bus station since that was their major source of travel, took them to a restaurant to eat and then took their luggage on to the castle...the owner of the restaurant was a friend of his and he drove them to the castle after they had eaten....extremely nice people...I can give you other info if you want to contact me at the above email...I am sure you would really enjoy it...

Kate, Bill and Cathie,
I've sent an email to Killbrittain Castle to ask about reservations. I haven't heard anything as yet. We arrive in Ireland on our daughter's 11th birthday, so I was hoping to find castle accomodations to make our vacation "magical".

Kate, did they reply to your requests for info? I'm getting anxious to pin down the details of our trip. (We will be there in April)

Thanks all! Jane

How long ago did you send the email?
It seems like he responded to my request within a couple days...they went last May...the email that I used is
[email protected]
He even sent us a brochure...also gave us some other info on the area and the castle history...I still have that in my email file if you would like it...
I know that he was booked on some of the days so we just worked around that as far as when the girls went...

Cathie,

I got the brochure! We booked the Castle for our daughter's 11 birthday. (A surprise for her!) It looks "magical", I can't wait! We will only be in Ireland for four days, so we are heading from Kilbrittain Castle to Killarney via the coast. We hope to see the Ring of Kerry then on to Dingle. I'd appreciate any B&B advice in Killarney or Dingle. (I still haven't nailed them down) We are planning to return to Blarney for close proximity to Cork Airport for our two days in London.

I think the anticipation is half the fun of the trip. I love to read everyone's ideas and advice.

Jane

I am so glad that you were able to get reservations at Kilbrittain Castle. I know your daughter will love it..
Would love to hear back from you after your trip as to how everything went...
My husband also says that I enjoy planning the vacations, doing the research and reading all the brochures more than I do going on the actual vacations..haha.
My daughter stayed at Chrystal Springs in Killarney..
This is their website if you want to check them out.
http://homepage.eircom.net/~doors/
They did not stay in Dingle so can't help you there.
The ladies name is Eileen Brosnan who runs Chrystal Springs.
You did not mention if you had a hotel in London yet - they did stay in London for 3 nights at the Euro Hotel..
Reasonable prices considering London is so VERY expensive...nothing fancy but very clean and people were extremely nice...wouldn't hesitate to stay there myself..close to the TUBE so they could get to any place they wanted.
.
They loved the South and West Coast of Ireland with the Ring of Kerry and Cliffs of Moher etc. Said the scenery was beautiful.
Someday I may even get there myself but she has 10 rolls of film for me to look at so guess that will have to suffice for now.
Have a wonderful time!!!
