Kid's tour guide for London
 

I am taking a tween to London to see the sights and learn some history. I have taken the kid many times when much younger and did my own self tour with headphones. I am looking for an engaging tour guide who will really make my tween feel the history. I have used Rome4Kids in Rome. One tour guide was very engaging and the other one was just OK and didn't really engage the kid much. They have a sister company, Europe4Kids that services London but I would like to be sure this one will be as engaging as I would like. Does anyone have any recommendations? Specifically, I am interested in someone for Tower of London and Hampton Court Palace.

How about a Harry Potter tour? I'd love that myself!

The Harry Potter Tour is fun. I took my grandkids who were age 7 and 11 at the time. It is a walking tour throughout Central London were various movie scenes were filmed. We are huge HP fans. If you are so so about HP I would forego it. There is a HP studios somewhere near London but it was expensive and not close to where we were (and we had limited time).

The Tower of London has tours and we absolutely loved them. There are various guides who do different historical periods and locations within the tower. It was very informative, and they really engage the kids.

Me personally -- I would not use a tour guide. A Harry Potter walking tour like one of these

Popular Walks - London Walks would be fun. And one of the But a guided/comprehensive tour - not that great an idea.

London Walks has many other great itineraries.

Also most of the museums have really good group and private tours.

The London Transport Museum has always had a special appeal for kids - lots of hands-on stuff - no need of tour guide.

Years ago I did a trip to London with 4 12-year olds and booked a Blue Badge Guide for them.
I found one through their website, and she was great. The advantage of this is that you have the same guide for several places.
Blue Badge guides are the only officially qualified guides who can take you to main attractions, without having to book a guide for each place separately.

This was years ago, and I cannot recall the name of the guide. I remember she started at the National Portrait Gallery to show the girls the main 'characters; they would be talking about on the tour.

I just checked out the London Transport Museum website (thanks Pal). Wish I had known about it - the GK's would have loved it.

London Transport Museum also has a large number of collectables - Tube advertising posters like "See Flamingos at Golders Green by Tube", etc- really nicely done posters - hundreds of copies of them and Tube wall maps and mini buses, tube cars, etc and this area if free to enter. Great place for London-themed gifts - well London transit anyway.

nanabee - Have you been to York's National Railway Museum? Similar and kids love it too with lots of hands-on things - right next to York train station.
