Count me among those who are not fans of Dar Pallaro. It's generic Italian, and they've been serving the same meal (no choice; you eat what they put in front of you) for the last 25 years or so, mostly to Americans clutching the Rick Steves guidebook.

In the Forum/Colosseum area, I would suggest La Piazzetta on Vicolo del Buon Consiglio. It's real, real Romans eat there, you can have a meal from their antipasto and dessert buffets. The antipasto buffet costs 9 Euro and the dessert buffet 6 Euro, if I recall correctly.

Kevin 1967--Was in Rome June 2008. Stayed in Trastevere and ate most of our evening meals there.

Ristorante San Michele located at 00153 Roma (Trastevere) Lungotevere a Ripa, 7. (Vicolo del Canale,s.n.

Telephone: 06.584.826

Wonderful ambiance, friendly waiters, reasonable prices, great good. One of the 4 meals we ate totaled 40.30 Euros for party of 4.

Can't wait to go back again (2010?)

Here is google map link to site so you can view it and surrounds. Hope it works! If not, let me know.http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&sour...,0.009538&z=17

Kevin, looks like the hyper works!! Note little man on lower right of screen=--he walks where ever you point and move him. Really cool!! I realize you and most others may already be aware of this feature, but today is my first experience with it. Feel like I'm back in Rome!

Hi Kevin,

After the jump restaurants in Rome's centro storico placed on a map so you may find them easily.

We like them all and most are reasonably priced. Always try to order fresh and local for the best food in Rome. Try Piperno for the artichoke.

Buon Appetito!

Hi Kevin -
Our favorite was Osteria dell'Angelo. We ate there w/ our kids when our son was 14. We all loved it. One price, you get a choice of your main course. It was delicious and in December 2006 cost 25 eu a person. It's a little northeast of the Vatican but worth the slight trek.

You've probably seen Franco's thread: http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...2&tid=34792415 and he lists that as among his favorites.
