Kenmare Lodging
We will be in Kenmare for a weekend in June. What family - friendly affordable B&B would you recommend and why? I think we'd like to be close to the town.
|
I used this web site http://www.kenmare-online.com/.I had a hard time getting responses,I had to email 6 or 7 before I was able to book a family room for this June(Sun/Mon).

My husband and I stayed at Hawthorn House in Kenmare. It was reasonabley priced, the owner was lovely and accomodating, the breakfast was very good, and it was within walking distance of the town of Kenmare.
|
We were very charmed by the pictures of Oakfield, but were not happy after staying there. It is located a good drive from town, and the owners seemed unhappy to have guests.
If you click on my name, you will see my "Ireland Newbies" trip report- more info. given there... %%- |
Anyone ever stay at Willow Lodge?
|
No but TA has one review and a very bad one - "had a room booked for 2 nights at the Willow Lodge, and upon arrival (shortly past check-in time, but with no opportunity to call ahead), found that the hostess had given our room away. she then proceeded to lecture us on how we were late and should have called. I was there for a holiday, not a lecture! would not book there again."
|
Another vote for Hawthorn House. Lovely lady and great accommodations. We stayed two nights.

Hey, I read that report and I'm not concerned. She's trying to run a business there and if someone didn't show, she has every right to give the room away after the time limited has passed.

Didn't see WHAT weekend inJune you are talking about. There is a Bank Holiday Weekend in EARLY June. If you are talking about THAT weekend, you better book something PRONTO!!!

Nope, not that weekend. Besides, everyone will be in Killarney at the HOG rally. :-)

We stayed right in town at Virginia's in May 05. Basic lodging but very nice owners. Terrific breakfasts. Reasonable rates. (Learned about it from this forum, BTW.)
|
carolsc - What do you consider "reasonable rates" ? Are the May rates a bit lower since it's shoulder season? I'm finding the rates fairly high in Ireland.
|
Reasonable to me in Ireland is around 35 Euro per person.
Virginia's is higher than that, I believe. I was once booked there on my last trip, but when I found out she was on this site advertising her place posting as a Fodorite, I cancelled. ((b)) |
How did you figure that out Budman?
|
Hey Budman, can you share some more info on the Virginia's self-posting? Is there any suspicion that she's also self-posted reviews on tripadvisor?

Here's a link. Read down to HappyCheesehead's post:
http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34481474 "Author: HappyCheeseheadDate: 03/07/2004, 02:44 pm A couple of weeks ago, I jumped in and called BS on the owner of an Irish B&B who was recommending her business under several different names. She was busted when she forgot which of her false indenties she was posting under, and signed her real name to one of her fake identities, LOL. She had at least 4 that I found (interesting that every single one of these people just adored her B&B and they all planned a trip to GOA at the same time too)and there could be more, who knows? Fodors removed quite a few of her posts, but not all, so she still has some of her fake recommendations out there. Unfortunately, Fodors also completely removed the thread where it was discovered that she was involved in this activity. If anyone searches right now for the name of her B&B, they will find some of her fake recommendations, but nothing saying they are fake! Interestingly, a couple of posters called me rude for pointing out what she was doing, but one did agree with me that it was wrong to use this forum to advertise their own business." They deleted most of the posts by this person, but this one still exists by one of the sidekicks: http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34447058 Noreen/Sarah Got mixed up with their postings, and HappyCheesehead discovered it. I've been following it, and some say they were very happy there. I believe her price was 50 Euro per person. I just got turned off by the advertising and cancelled my reservation. ((b)) |
You also may want to consider Lansdowne Arms hotel...not sure of the rates at that time of year but a tremendous place with a great location! BTW, I am not the owner...I live in the states. :-)
