Kenmare B&B suggestions?
 

I decided to spend our first night in Kenmare on the way to Dingle so that we aren't driving too far from Cork the first day. This way, we'll also be nearer to Muckross and Killarney Nat'l Park the next day. Any good suggestions for B&B's? Thanks.

Try Sallyport House. It´s one of the nicest B&B´s I´ve been to in Ireland. The owners are very friendly and helpful, the rooms are very comfortable, beautifully furnished and exceptionally clean. The location is unbeatable! I would highly recommend this B&B.

Shelburne Lodge is a favorite that i would recommend.

Sallyport House gets my vote. I think it is much nicer than Shelburn Lodge. Also Sallyport's setting is superb -- a quick walk into town yet set on the Kenmare River with a scenic park out back. Views of mountains, water or garden and orchard from every room. Wonderful breakfast.

We stayed 3 nights at Shelburne Lodge last October and loved it.

IrishEyes, if Sallyport House is *much nicer* than Shelburne Lodge, then it must be outstanding. We'll put it on our list for next time.

beach_dweller, Sallyport IS outstanding. Foreign dignitaries, mayors of major US cities, celebrities and American "royalty" stay there. The owners are very discreet.

The house is filled with antiques and a collection of very fine Irish artwork. One room has a four-poster king bed with views of the garden. Another is a queen room with separate sitting area. The bathrooms have those dinner-plate size shower heads that can drown you if you want. There are open fires every evening in the sitting areas (except if they are having a heat wave -- which isn't that often!). Breakfast is superb. When I was there some people who were staying at Sheen Falls Lodge actually arranged to have breakfast at Sallyport and were raving about how good it was. When they saw one of the rooms they commented they wished they had stayed at Sallyport instead.

Definitely put it on your list!

I agree with you Lizard. We absolutely loved Virginias. Not sure what the cost of Sallyport is, but I would guess its for the high budget traveler. I had the Blue Cheese breakfast too - out of this world.. The poached fruit in spices was fabulous too. Loved the downtown location but also within access of lovely country walks. Neil and Noreen were the warmest hosts we met on our travels - warm and welcoming without being intrusive. Couldn't fault the place.

Sallyport does sound nice, but they do not have rooms with two beds and I believe I read they do not allow children. (Which may be a plus for some travelers!) :)

Sallyport does indeed have a room with two beds. The queen room with sitting area also has a sofa bed in addition to the queen bed. They have another king room that can be configured with two beds. They do not take children under 13. 140 - 150 Euro per room per night
(price based on double occupancy).

Thanks for that info. When I inquired about twin beds, they told me they had none, and didn't mention a sofa sleeper. We were looking for two rooms, with two beds in each, so perhaps that was the mix up. At any rate, we're booked at Shelburne, which also sounds very nice. I'll keep Sallyport in mind for future trips.
