Kayaking at Capri
 

We are coming into Capri on a cruise ship. We have from 7am till 5pm. We would like to see the Blue Grotto and thought it would be cool to kayak there. Any advice on how to do this? Any other "must not miss things" at Capri that we should also see or do?

You could swim or kayak in after about 6pm but prior to that you have to pay and take one of the official boats in. I looked into this on my trip about a month ago. We did rent a kayak from Marina Piccola and went to the Emerald Grotto. It was nice but not a "must not miss thing". I think the "must not miss" is Capri at night.

Not exactly an answer to your question, but we rented a small boat for the 4 of us and motored around the entire island. We stopped at the Blue Grotto, transferred to a commercial rowboat for a ride inside, and then transferred back to our motor boat to continue around the island.

I think that the view from Monte Solaro is another must in Capri. You can either climb it or take the chairlift up there.

I read several questions about renting a kayak on Capri. Until date there is no rental service. Next year there will be several 'complete paddling loops' being organised, the best way to see the whole of Capri, both by NW Passae as well as by GLT/Amalfi Coast Sea Kayak (www.italykayaktours.com)

There are mobs of people waiting to get into the Blue Grotto - which you can do only if the sea is essentially completely flat - and then by lying down inside the rowboats. Otherwise to get inside you need to swim in. (Anyone sitting up in a rowboat runs a significant risk of hitting their head on the bottom of the rock opening through which you have to squeeze.

Separately, not sure where you ship will land you - but ferries from Capri back to the mainland stop in the late afternoon. If you have to be back on the cruise ship by 5 pm - you would probably need to leave Capri by 3 pm.

Kayaking into the Grotta Azzurra is definitely not an option, especially not during the 'tourist season'. But paddling along the Amalfi Coast and around Capri there are many more grottos to visit, equally beautiful, and definitely less crowded.
