Katyn massacres
Has anyone been to a site of one of the Katyn massacres, to one of the mass graves or to one of the memorials in Poland, Ukraine, or Russia?
Most of them seem to be in Russia. I'd prefer not to go to Russia. It looks like traveling from Vilnius would be do-able.
Any experience on this? I'd like to go in September 2017.

Hello Peg
Not been (and probably ever will) but on the subject, before you go, you can read this excellent book from Philipp Kerr : a man without breath.

Thanks for the responses. I didn't know I'd have to cross Belarus, but I do still have a Russian visa, so I presume I could get across to the site you mention.
I have read at least one book by Philipp Kerr. I'll put this one on my kindle.
I had a DVD called "Katyn," but I no longer have it. I gave it to a professor at a nearby university. It was Polish-made. Very impressive. Very touching.
One entry about Katyn on Wikipedia has a picture of a memorial in Poland with three crosses. It is in some mountains in Poland, which I can neither spell nor pronounce.

we discussed the many memorials on your other thread, there are some in the US.
As for actual sites, I've never been east of Poland. That memorial on Wikipedia is in central Poland, it's not the site of the massacre. It's in-between Krakow and Lodz, near Kielce which was the site of a pogrom against Jews by Poles post-war and another massacre of them (the Jews).

Thanks for the list of memorials in the U.S.on the other thread, Christina.
I have great admiration for the Poles, but of course, their behavior toward the Jews is very distressing. Sad.
I have found a map which lists various massacre sites and memorials, and I'm in touch with the travel agency that I used in 2015 on three tours I took in Poland.
I've also been checking on train travel from Vilnius to Minsk and Smolensk.
