Katikies or Perivolas???

We are going to Oia for our honeymoon and are looking for lodging. Can anyone speak to the differences between Katikies and Perivolas and if one is better than the other? Thank you!

europhile May 2nd, 2005 09:00 AM

I have not stayed at Perivolas, but I've stayed at Katikies 3 times (going again next month), and I've walked around the public areas of Perivolas. See this previous post for my two cents about the differences (if this doesn't work, click on my name and look for the thread on Amalfi Coast v. Greek Islands):

I'm a big Katikies fan, but the cost is really rising every year. So far, it's still worth it to us (given how little vacation time we take- we want to make the very most of it!). Also check out the reviews on Tripadvisor.com. There are several first hand accounts from posters about each place. Truly, you probably can't go wrong either way. They are both beautiful properties in incredible settings. Have fun!

Thank you. I was leaning towards Katikies -- it looks phenomenal. Any suggestions as far as rooms go? Is a standard room adequate? (it is our honeymoon!)

europhile May 2nd, 2005 10:06 AM

We peeked into the standard room of a couple we met at Katikies last summer. They were happy enough with it, but it was very small. Only a double bed (not even a queen size), and no room for their suitcases. But it did have a private small balcony and a wonderful view (as do all the rooms). They were happy to spend less money and enjoy all the wonderful public areas. This summer, we booked a "superior" room, which is one category above a standard. The website describes this room as having a "spacious bedroom"(as opposed to just a bedroom), so hopefully this means slightly more space for luggage, etc. Really, we spent very little time in our room- we were mostly outside on our terrace- so a smallish room would not be a problem. But, then again, it is a honeymoon! You might not want to be too cramped, just in case you DO spend lots of time in your room! :-)

ps- for lots of detail about Katikies, you can see my honeymoon trip report (but I can't seem to figure out how to past the thread for you).

I have seen both. Perivolas offers more privacy due to room settings. Both have amazing view. You can not go wrong with both.

Happy Travelling

Do a search for threads on "Katikies Suites". I've posted about that, too. Basically, Katikies Suites used to be Atlantis Villas (another hotel in Oia); Katiikies Hotel purchased it and completely renovated it, added restaurants and a spa. Now it is Katikies Suites- a sister hotel to Katikies Hotel, with 17 rooms in a different building, located in the same area as Perivolas hotel. I stayed there when it was Atlantis Villas, and loved the views. Now that they have made improvements and brought it up to the standard of Katikies Hotel, I'm sure it's great. We're staying there the beginning of June, so I can post when we get back and let you know.

pineco;

I am going to be at the Katikies Suites on May 9th-12th. I willpost when I get back.

From what I understand Katikies Suites is even more luxurious than Katikies Hotel ( if that is possible!)

I'll let you know!!

pineco May 3rd, 2005 08:46 AM

Thanks for the responses. So it sounds like they aren't on the exact same property, but located a distance from one another? The Katikies website really doesn't make this clear. I guess if the suites are supposed to be more luxurious and they appear to be priced identically, we should stay at the suites. Will wait to hear how it is -- have a great time on your trips!

Tripgirl --

Back from Oia yet? I'm dying to hear about Katikies suites vs. hotel and your trip in general. Thanks!

tripgirl May 16th, 2005 05:58 AM

pineco:

I just got back last night and will report over the weekend.

BUT

You MUST stay at Katikies Suities; UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!!!!

The staff are amazing, the place is phenomenal. We were basically their first guests after renovations and it is just heaven on earth; well worth the price.

all rooms are great, as I saw many because we occupied 8 rooms( out of the 17), but let me know what you are seeking and perhaps i can let you know of the rooms and you can make a request of them.

Again, let me get over about 22 hours total travel time yesterday and I'll report over the weekend.

Welcome back, tripgirl! I'm so glad you had a good experience with Katikies Suites. We are booked in the honeymoon suite, but I understand it does not have a direct sunset view. Did you find any of the rooms with this view from their own terrace? Or is it best just to keep the HM suite and watch the sunset from the pool area? Also, did you try the spa? I can't wait to hear more details. But first, get some rest! :-)

pineco May 16th, 2005 06:25 AM

Thanks tripgirl! Can't wait to hear all about it! We reserved a junior suite for October, but I'd love to hear details about the various rooms. I'm glad you had a great time! Hope you're sun kissed and very relaxed!

tripgirl May 16th, 2005 06:27 AM

europhile,

Just about to jump into the shower but I will certainly answer your question.

I think you ought to have a terrace facing the caldera, a few don't and have a side view. We had one couple who had a suite, fabulous, but a small terrace on its' side with no room for the fab lounge chairs. That was room 24.

My hubbie and I had room 9, with a gigantic terrace just off the pool. The room was fab, the bathroom however was very small with no sink room. the shower also leaks out under the glass door. They are still tweaking the property, but these little things did not really bother us, as wait until you experience about the best service ever ( and I grew up in the hotel biz and have traveled enough to know I have never received service as this!!)

The manager, Lefty( his Greek name is too long so he has everyone call him Lefty), is just a dream, and you cannot even open up your own can of soda without one of the staff rushing over to you to open it for you.

Location of course is fab and you know the drill when it comes to the stairs: ALOT OF THEM!

I did not see the honeymoon suite, unless one of us got it and did not know it, but I would make sure your terrace can accommodate two loungebeds as it is nice after you leave the pool to have drinks on your terrace lying down.

The spa was not yet open, but the spa menu sounds fab, as it was in the packet of info in your room.

I can't say enough about the place; some of our rooms even smelled freshly painted as they were finishing them just before we arrived.

I willpost later this weekend and of course, continue to ask any other questions about the place.

the sunset was hard to view fully from our room as we needed to be higher up. But we did got to Fira and see it fully from Francos bar. It was as they say truly amazing!

I had read so much about the fabulous setting of Santorini and Katkies. But I became concerned when I read some posts about stray cats. As a cat lover, the most beautiful setting would not make up for the anguish of seeing starving cats. What experience have people had on Santorini in this regard?

beanweb24 May 16th, 2005 08:46 AM

I didn't see any starving cats. I saw lots of cats, but most either appeared to be residents of hotels or restaurants or "real" homes. Even cats I saw on the street had food that was scattered around them.

Dogs are also on the loose, but they didn't appear to be starving, either. In fact, many are quite friendly...a brown and white spotted one adopted me for a few days (even though I didn't feed it) and would escort me from the main road to Esperas.

There aren't hordes/gangs of either animal running amuck, but you will see some of both...but I never saw any indication of sick/starving animals.

tripgirl May 16th, 2005 09:54 AM

The cats and dogs are many, but no problem. A few were straggly, but some were real cute. Don't let it bother you.

europhile May 16th, 2005 11:45 AM

Thanks for the info, tripgirl. The honeymoon suite is supposed to have lounge chairs, and also an outdoor jacuzzi, so it must have a pretty large terrace. I do hope it faces the caldera, though. Did you try the restaurants at the hotel? Does their terrace restaurant compare to the one at Katikies Hotel?

tripgirl May 16th, 2005 12:22 PM

I did not try the restaurants, but you will see it is actually the breakfast space then converted at night to a restaurant, but it is very romantic. The staff are dressed in pure whte outfits with gold epulets ( sp?), all very chic.

We went to Ambrosia( fab) and 1800( also fab) and my husband and i went seperate from the group to Selene in Fira, also truly fab.

I do not know what the restaurant at Katikies Hotel is like.

Please feel free to grill me more if you need to on Katikies Suites.

pineco May 16th, 2005 01:00 PM

I would love to grill you some more! If given the choice between the hotel or the suites, do you recommend the suites? Also, we reserved a junior suite. Is there a big difference between a junior suite and a superior room other than obviously cost? I'm just wondering if it's truly necessary and worth it to pay the extra $ for the suite. Also, is there a particular room # you would recommend or a particular request I should make? Thanks!!!!
