just returned from Positano, Italy
 

We have just returned from a wonderful week in Positano, and would be delighted to give any advice on restaurants accommodation etc., as we benefited so much from advice from other Fodors web users.

Dear Helen,<BR><BR>I will be going to Positano on October, can you tell me about some things that I shouldn't miss or some "finds" like a restaurant or trattoria. Thanks!

We are planning a 3 day side trip from Rome to Positano. We are planning to stay in the Villa Rosa Hotel. <BR>Do you know anything about the Villa Rosa? <BR>What restaurants do you recommend?<BR>What sights do you recommend in or about Positano?<BR><BR>Thanks, Greg<BR>

We stayed at Hotel villa franca, which was wonderful. Positano is a vertical town, and hotel was right at top! fabulous views. In my opinion Positano is not suitable for the elderly or children, due to the horrendous steps everywhere (not a keep fit fanatic!) Having previously stayed in Sorrento, found no comparison to Positano...it is just perfect. There are loads of good restaurants, hotels etc, scenery is wonderful, and the whole atmosphere of place is the best. Went on day trip to Amalfi and Ravello. Liked Ravello, worth the extra trip up on the bus. Very peaceful and pretty, probably a little too quiet for us to stay. Felt we picked the right choice. <BR>Restaurants now! We ate in Chez Black a couple of times, which is good just to hang out and have a pizza and wine, but suggest booking early in order to get outside table. San Pietro was a fab evening, it is a short cab ride (we got private water taxi there...very cool way to arrive). It is an excellent 5 star hotel. Suggest arriving an hour b4 in order to have the best bellinis you have tasted on their terrace...meal equally as good. Another reccommendation is le terrazze, on opposite end of shore to chez black. Had an excellent "6"! course meal there! Covo dei Saraceni was also good, just by where you get the boats, a very pleasant evening. We were reccomended La Strada in Priano, and found meal to be good, but restaurant totally lacking in any ambience, probably not worth the 15 euro cab ride there and back. Le Sireneuse is also a fantastic hotel to eat..twinkling white lights on a beautiful terrace...my husbands t bone steak was divine! Wherever you decide to go, I hope you enjoy yourselves as much as we did. Positano is a magic town, full of culinary delights. Some of these restaurants are not cheap, but so worth it. Have fun.. I am jealous!

Hi Helen, we're planning a trip to almafi coast in October. have decided to stay at poistano for a few days. At Hotel L'ancorra. I've a 10 month old baby travelling with us. Would you recommend driving from Sorrento to Positano ? Is the drive difficult/safe? or should we take the public transport?<BR><BR>Thanks<BR><BR>Regards<BR><BR>Sio k

Greg,we stayed at Villa Rosa in May, '01 and loved it; it's right across the street from the very posh Sireneuse. Lots of good things written on here re VR; run a Text Search to read it all. Spectacular views of both sea and mountains!

Helen, We will be staying at the Villa Franca in early Oct. Can you tell me about the hotel? We have a double superior room book. Is the view wonderful? Are the terraces big enough to sit out on? Any info would be great, I can't wait.

Dorothy, you will love it. There are chairs and a little table on all of the verandas I saw where you can have breakfast or whatever. It is my fav. hotel.
