Dear John,
I am considering visiting the Italian Riviera sometime in the next year. I like temperatures between 75F and 85F, but don't want to go during the main tourist season, any suggestions on when I should go from your experience? I am thinking late September of 2003. Did you happen to take note of any snorkeling to be done or maybe river rafting or some other water type activites? How did you like the Cinque Terre? Hiking along there looks like something I would really enjoy. FYI: I am also considering going to Venice, Florance, Rome, Pompeii, Pisa and Sardegna. Sardegna will be to visit friends. Thank you for the offer of answering questions. Take care, Suzanne

we want to visit the cinque terre and have planned 2 nites/ 3 days.... is this too much? i cannot find info on how long it takes to walk between the villages.... we were thinking of starting from the south end walking north... the walk from riomaggiore to manarola ( via del amore)... do you know how long to allow for that walk? also vernazza to monterosso? any reccomendations on where to stay? thanks for any help you can give..

Rick Steves book has extensive information about Cinque Terre. It takes approx 5 hours to do the hike (depending on your pace, and how much exploring you do etc) I leave on saturday, and I am taking this book with me, along with a few others.

Kelly
I think 5 hours would be pushing it unless you don't stop. The first leg from Mont. - Ver is the longest and toughest. It was a bit slow at times and probably took us well over an hour.We needed a rest after this and we have done a lot of hiking. Cirtainly doable in a day but you will be tired at the end.

John

Walk from Riom - Man, and it is a walk not a hike, is no more than 30 min. This trail is new and well build. Very different and much easier than the rest of the trails.

John
