Can't reply as to how touristy it is now, but we were there about 4 yrs. ago. Drove down from Slovenia. Stayed in Porec and Rovinj for about a week. Decided to drive to Trogir and Split. We were shocked at the number of tourists in Trogir. Stayed two nights and drove back to Istria. spent the rest of the time in Rovinj. Back then ran into very few English speaking tourists there. The English speakers were Canadians,or English. Most of the other tourists were German and Italian. It was great, not very touristed until we went to Trogir. From our experience four yrs. ago I can only imagine what Split, Dobrovnik and Trogir must be like now.

Haven't read all the replies yet but here is my take from last year September.

Split enjoyed it for a couple of nights because it felt like a real town where you could see the goings on of Croatian life

Hvar, fantastic with lots of tourists but I still felt like I saw Croatians enjoying some of the same things I was (swimming in the sea, hanging out at the cafe, walking around town).

Dubrovnik - Beautiful but felt like DISNEYLAND... I can't imagine it in July/August. Loved the concerts (which are an aspect of being touristy I guess which is great). Similarly enjoyed the Audio tour of the wall.

Mljet - Beautiful and quiet and touristy in that I could sign up for a trip to take me there which was good.

We loved Split and Dubrovnik on our quick trip. I'm glad we only stayed 2 nights in each place but it was great to see. We will be going back for sure and going to Hvar, Korcula, Montenegro, etc. later.

In Dub we stayed way up with a magnificent balcony overlooking old town-WOW, it was nice! I think it was Antonella Apts.

Croatia is a beautiful country, and yes I agree it gets crowded with tourists, but then again, doesnt every country? If we want to travel and see places, then we have to understand that there will be other people visiting also.

I think to say that " gazillion cruise ships that unload in Dubrovnik each day " is slightly over the top, they dont have them every day!

In the next few years they will commence building bigger runways, which will allow more touritst from USA visit, therefore they anticipate it will cut down on the amount of ships.

Croatia is very beautiful, I could never imagine not going back.

I went to Slovenia and Croatia last September and loved it. It is touristy, but it's worth the visit. There are so many day trips to take to explore the area. I would go now while it's cheap. They are currently not part of the EU, so it's a cheap alternative to other parts of Europe. I plan on going back and exploring Northern Croatia.

Thank you for speeking so well of my beloved Croatia. I am Croatian and local to Split and Hvar and my advice is avoid travelling in Croatia from 15.07 - 20.08. One of our biggest problems was that for a long time the turistic season was only July and August but we are working very hard to make it last from April till October.

Sure you can find such if that is what you are looking for, but it is REAL easy to get off the beaten path and have a whole beach or island practically to yourself.

The coast from Dubrovnik to Split is gorgeous. The cities can be touristy, but even at that you can avoid it. We spent August in Dubrovnik and avoided the crowds.

It is MUCH less built up than ANY coast that we have seen in Europe..they have not ruined it yet like so many others.

I also just returned from Croatia (Split, Trogit, Hvar, Korcula, Dubrovnik). We were lucky in that there were no cruise ships in Dubrovnik and, early in the morning, there were only the people setting up at the market, the locals and the cleaning people. Magnificent! I thought the coast was drop dfead gorgeous and agree that it is not as built up as so many others in Europe. I would go back in a nano second.

While we have found Dubrovnik to be touristy, we make a point to get off the beaten path. We were the only people in many places we visited in Istria, for example. In Croatia it is easy to get away from the crowds.

It is FAR less touristy than many other countries.
