Just heard back from La Calcina! We have a room!!

Finally, got my email and they have a room in May for us. It's going to be a long 9 months.

Hi Dave, I don't even know where La Calcina is, lol, but your enthusiasm made me smile and I felt compelled to wish you a pleasant journey.

Regarding the 9 month wait, the time will zip by quicker than you can imagine.

Have a wonderful trip!

VENICE, VENICE, VENICE. Did I say it's in Venice???

francophile03 Sep 5th, 2006 05:59 AM

DinPa, just curious if you were requested by La Calcina to send a three night deposit.

Another poster reported a couple of days ago that for his/her La Calcina May '07 visit the hotel asked for a three night deposit which I think is too much!

Venice is absolutely lovely, my DH and I were there last winter. Let me know if you need any restaurant recs (Or you can click on my name and scroll for our trip report)

Enjoy bella Italia!

You are one lucky, lucky duck. DH and I stayed in a canal-front room there a few years ago, and I now consider it my home away from home in Venice. Great hotel, professionally run, a little away from the crowds, sumptuous breakfast. Did I say we liked it?
:-)

DinPa- That is one of my favorite hotels ANYwhere!! It is just the sweetest place. Nice breakfast too. Don't miss making a reservation so you can use the private rooftop terrace for a couple hours sometime.

For the foks who do not like their reservation policies, you'll simply have to stay elsewhere :-) because they obviously have plenty of future guests who don't mind.

DinPa Sep 5th, 2006 07:24 AM

francophile03:

They requested a 2 night deposit (staying 5 nights) by personal check.

Tiff:
Restaurant help is always welcome. I will get to your site soon. We have already been to Venice in 2005 for just 2 days with a group. We fell in love with it and wanted to return on our own. After reading the posts on this board, I also fell in love with La Calcina. Plane tickets bought, hotel reservation made and now time to do some research about Venice itself.

Thanks to all
Dave

Read the book by Jan Morris to get a feel for the real Venice.

I read your trip report. It was awesome!! Now I really can't wait to get there again. We have been to Murano and are planning to go to Burano this time. We will definitely check out your restaurant Al Raspo! Thanks

Dave

...just as an aside here, the PBS show "Globe Trekker" showed Venice this weekend past...gorgeous.

Tiff Sep 6th, 2006 07:01 AM

Hi DinPA ~ Just checking back in this morning.

This was our favorite in Venice:
Tavernetta San Maurizio (San Marco 2619 – phone 041 5285240)

If you make it over to Burano:
Al Raspo De Ua (Via Galuppi, 560 – phone 041 730095)

What I did was pen in a few recommended restaurants on our map so that while we wandered, when we felt like stopping in somewhere, I just had to look at our map to find a local dining spot. This method worked out very well.

Have a beautiful journey!

Trust me the 9 months will go by fast. I made all of my reservations back in February and now I am leaving for Venice in 24 days!

These last few days are the worst, it is so close I can taste it, yet it is so far. I find that I have a hard concentrating on anything else or caring about anything else. And since this is a slow time at work it makes it even worse, because I have plenty of time to think about it.

Congratulations on getting your room, I'm not staying there, but I've heard lots of great things about the place.

Add us to the excited list. We have a room at La Calcina for July '07, 4 nights! They are asking for it to be paid in full, which I don't exactly consider a "deposit" but it is high season and based on reviews and other comments, I think we're going to do it this way this time. Plus, it's the Redentore weekend, they were able to add an extra night and now it looks like the fireworks festa may be right outside our window. Excited, oh yes, we are.

Tiff I am trying to find your trip report and can't seem to locate it. Can you put it to the top or post it again so I can read it?

DinPa Sep 6th, 2006 11:00 AM

Wow, I thought I was early. July. Sounds like a great time with the fireworks. Hope your July is a little cooler than ours was last year. It was very, very hot in July of 2005

We were also in Venice in July 2000 - I remember the heat. I look forward to the day when we can travel in off-season and not on school breaks.

We have a reservation for a corner canal view room at La Calcina for the end of May 2007. We paid 3 nights deposit by personal chack for our 4 night stay. There were so many raves about the place on this board we decided to go for it even with the steep deposit. It looks so lovely I can't wait! I expect the time will fly by and we'll be there before I know it! Thanks for the restaurant recommendations and the great trip reports!
