Hi Vicki!

My husband and I are going to Greece in June (Visiting Crete, Santorini, Paros, Mykonos, Samos, Turkey). Did you find the ferry system easy to use? Also, did you rent mopeds at all? If so, how much did they charge.
Any "must see's or do's" in Santorini or Mykonos? Any "must never do again's"
Thanks,
Karen
Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

Hi Vicki.

I'd love to have any advice you can provide. My boyfriend and I are planning a trip in May to the same 3 spots you visited and I'd love to hear about your opinions on areas to stay and hotels. We also have 12 days so how would you suggest we break up the time?

Thanks Vicki,
Jane

Tom,
I can tell you about our experience with a laundromat in Fira, Santorini. A half load, wash and dry cost about $10 US. The laundry was given back to us in a wet ball inside a plastic bag. Their excuse on Santorini seems to be their lack of water (I don't know what their excuse was for not drying it), yet we'd just been to a similar island that didn't share this attitude. Maybe you'd have better luck in Athens.

Steven

Are you travelling in the summer (mid June to mid September) or else?

The ferries from the Piraeus to Santorini should take from 8:30 to 9 hours. G.A. Ferries and Agapitos Express Ferries serve the line. There's also a daily catamaran service between Rafina and Santorini run by Strinzis Lines. This takes about 5 hours. If the Meltemi wind is blowing hard the service is suspended (quite often after mid July to early Spetember).

I have no idea if reservations are needed for the catamaran service (I was not aware of it till the other day).

Regarding ferries, if you're travelling at night in the summer, reservation is a must. Otherwise you won't get a cabin ... Outside the summer season or if you're travelling during daylight I would guess that you should be ok just showing up at the dock.
Paulo

Vicki, in Santorini, Mykonos and Athens - what were the things you did that were the best? We're going there next month (spending a couple days in Athens - just hitting the other two during a cruise) and wanted to make sure we prioritized our stops right. Thank you. D

I didn't realize I would get such a response. I hope I can answer all the questions - if I forgot anyone, just e-mail me directly.
First of all, it was off-season when we visited so not all the hotels and shops were open. We spent 4 nights in Santorini at the Rocabella in Fira. It was a very nice place, but too far from downtown to walk, so had to take a taxi on every visit to town. We flew into Athens, spent one night at the Divanni Palace and then flew to Santorini. We were advised to fly as the ferry system did not operate when there was bad weather. We then flew to Mykonos for three nights and stayed at the Semeli hotel in Mykonos Town. This was a beautiful place. We then flew back to Athens for a couple of days before departing for home.
If you are looking for lots of activity, then Mykonos is the place. If you want beautiful views and more scenic trips- then I suggest Santorini.
The weather in Athens was great, but was cold and windy on the islands.
We did our laundry in our room, so I don't know about laundries.
If you are in Santorini, I would suggest taking the local bus(downtown by taxi stand) to Oia. It is worth seeing as well as the Ancient City. We hired a local cab driver for the trip to the Ancient City and he was very informative.
There is not as much sighseeing on Mykonos, but it was fun to see the fishermen come into the docks and we also walked the local streets to get a better idea of the normal life. The ferry to Delvos(?) was not running due to weather conditions, so we did not get to visit the island.
I hope I have answered most of the questions - if not - just e-mail me.
Vicki
