HappyCheesehead - thats funny... we have wild boar (Javelina) where i live, but no crossing signs!! I know its a funny thing to collect.. but there are so many fun ones! And its a hoot trying to get pictures of the signs - I always get really funny looks. I had to sneak onto a military base to get my 'jeep crossing'.. then i promptly lost it. One of my faves is the mama duck with babies following.. I appreciate your keeping your eyes out for me.

Have lots of fun planning your trip.. it will be here before you know it!

Pepnjak: What a small world. I live in Bellingham and I will be in Croatia 10/4- 10/10, staying in Dubrovnik and Trogir before flying to Rome. I wonder if there is a Croatian Club in B'ham. I'm looking forward to all these trip reports from folks who will be there before me. I am getting a little concerned about the infamous bus ride from Dub. to Trogir, gulp.

Callalilli,
Thanks for posting this.
I am so glad we decided to keep the car – bring it on Hvar (just in case, so we can explore the island) then drive from Split to Dubrovnik!
Sorry about your pictures…I would be devastated. But this is a wonderful reason to go back, don’t you think?

Hi callalilli, I am wondering if you noticed the post by Julie Vikmanas May 31st regarding the suggestion as to how possibly your photographs can be retrieved. Worth a try IMHO. Best wishes.

oh, yes! I did see JulieVikmanis' post.. I will be taking my camera in tomorrow to see if there is any chance. thank you, Julie... I'll let y'all know. How great would that be?!?? thanks, LoveItaly for reminding me.

Barb - about the bus ride... I think if you make sure to sit toward the front (for best air), on the right (for best views) and bring water, food and a good attitude... it should be ok. Its long, but I truly think it wouldnt have been so bad had I known ahead of time what to expect. .. and as I said, once I got to beautiful Trogir, I almost forgave the means to get there.

Great report, just returned from Dubrovnik myself and still enjoying my memories and those of others! Wanted to add though that we got some very good quoted prices for b & B's that were absolutley lovely looking. The one we stayed at was http://www.bedandbreakfast-dubrovnik...ouse_rooms.htm and the room was 50 or 60 Euros a night depending on the room. VERY comfortable bed, down quilt and porch with chairs overlooking the old city and the adriatic. Deep sigh...

rosexmke... the B&B looks wonderful. We are a bit sorry we didnt look further than we did. Our room was adequate for us, but the view from the B&B on the website is lovely !! Did you have a terrace? (also, i'm curious what the 'included breakfast' consisted of. We were sorely missing breakfasts). Looking forward to your report!

Breakfast was cereal, fresh fruit, fresh wheat bread, camembert cheese, juice coffee and yougurt. Regarding the terrace, yes on our floor the whole width of the building and on the next floor below. Breakfast was served on the terrace. For others reading this I also found a couple of other places that looked good. Ivan was a little difficult communicating with but I felt comfortable. Our plans changed and he could not accomodate the date and for the other, they made an error and had to cancel. I would recommend both though. They all are located on the Ploce gate side and I liked staying on that side. Also the street we were on was called Petra Kresimira, # 33. I wouldnt stay much higher in the hill than that and I also would not stay much further south than that. The other major street - north south is called Frana Supila. If you are around there the height for the view is okay and the walk easier but I would stay a little higher myself if you have a view. The other 3 sites I liked are [email protected] [email protected] ..and http://www.dubrovnik-online.com/apartments_antonela/

rosexmke,
I just emailed your B&B.Not only looks great but the fact that they'll be offering boat trips is a plus. I'm just concerned about the walk up the hill. Also, how did you get to the old town from there?

Hi Rosexmke:

What a co-incidence! Apts Antonella 1 is the apartment (the one with the white leather couch) we rented way back in December for our September '06 trip. I adore the view but am a touch worried about the height! I understand there is a bus that goes near it (for the way UP) and that might help. Did you happen to notice the apt/area when you were in Dubrovnik? If so, how did it look to you?

Syl, the apartment owner will give you directions but basically every block or so there is a winding stone staircase down. You see the old city the whole time - you will know how to do it. There is a bus, actually 2 and they stop right in front of the B & B but we always walked even when we were at the Pile gate side of things. Also know that on the Ploce gate side there is the old port and all sorts of boat companies/travel groups set up tables with itineraries and such and you can browse and compare prices on boat trips. Happy cheesehead, by the way are you from wisconsin? I live in Milwaukee! I looked at their site again and the street is East/West so my main street North/South landmarks aren't helpful. Ask her how far she is from Petra Kresimira IV or Frana Supila - both are major N/S streets. But, it does look like she is closer to the old city than I was in terms of n/s though not sure height. And if you are closer n/s then the climb is less. email with any questions. [email protected]. Put fodors in the subject line.

Yes, I sure am from WI- Sun Prairie reporting in! I wondered if the MKE in your name referred to Milwaukee, and I was right.

Thanks for the helpful hints about location - and I will email Apts Antonela with some location questions. I think we are in about the same position you were, hubby is 49 and I am 44 - NOT in the best shape (and WE have a few extra bratwurst pounds on us) and we wondered about those stairs! Nothing like vacation to start a shape up program though. We are so much more active when we are on vacation - I spend my days in cubicle city at work.

Thanks for the email addy - now get outside and enjoy this fabulous weekend we have in front of us! I have to go trim the mugo pines and pull grass out of the borders, but will enjoy every minute of it!

Barb and Pepnjak,

Indeed a small world. We live in Anacortes (On the Guemes Channel as you head toward the Ferry), and frequently attended the Croatian Club dinners. David does a tenderloin that is to die for!

We went with the Anacortes Sister Cities group to Vela Luka, our Sister City on Korcula, two years ago. Stayed with a Croatian family for a few days and then just wandered among the islands and up and down the coast. Simply wonderful! I did a six-part (much too long) trip report that might still be of some use, though it is obviously dated.

I must quibble with Callalilli's recommendations on the bus from Dubrovnik to Trogir. I would suggest you get seats on the LEFT side of the bus, as that will give you the best views when headed North. We did it the other way, from Split to Dub, and found it a delightful ride. A bit windey, but the wonderful scenery made the four hours go very quickly. Trogir is only about another half-hour North from Split, so it should not be too long of a day.

If you have any questions, my URL is: [email protected].

Have a WONDERFUL trip!

hi nukesafe.. no quibble here. I said the right side ..thinking it was on the right as you walk onto the bus. i guess you are right, it is on the left once you are seated facing forward. I guess its all a matter of perspective. As is everything.

If it makes you feel any better I've erased all the pics in my camera with one click more than once. On trips to Tahoe and Zermatt...with the same friend who no longer trusts me to be the photographer but won't buy a digital camera herself!

OOPS I went to scroll down and my finger hit "post my reply"...anyway we will ferry to Sali where I plan on Kayaking.

13-16 Hvar/Brac/Korkula..I am trying to figure out the best way with a car to do this leg and not sure which island?

17,18,19 Dubrovnik and side trips...maybe
Kornati islands.

20 trogir
21,22,23,Istra region and return the car to Venice on the 24th.I would like to consider,Opatija, pula,Rovinj and Motovan.

I am still fine tuning but this looks like the bones of the trip. Any help and /or suggestions would be great!

I am doing the trip planning and George is to learn a bit of the language. His Grandmother came from Split and Grandfather from Dubrovnik. My understanding there are no Pepelnjak's in the phone book in Dubrovnik. Will be fun to try and research a bit while we are there!

I will close and read your report.

Patti,

I just sent you my trip report via email. Hope it helps.

Your trip sounds wonderful! My only suggestion would be to dump the car before going to the islands, or just park it on the mainland for a few days. The website on Sali says you can walk to anyplace in the village in ten minutes, and that a boat is the best way to see the rest of the island. I have not been to Otok, but both Hvar town and Korcula would be a nightmare with a car IMHO. We managed with public transport quite well, though I can see that a car would be helpful in getting from Venice to Zadar.

We are in the midst of planning our next trip for October. We'll hit Italy and Paris, but skip Croatia this time.

Whatever you do, I'm sure you will have a GREAT time!
