Lynnaustin - you asked my question before I had a chance! Anyone have an answer to that? I am sure it is a sanitary measure and I actually started thinking maybe a good idea! But would love to hear other thoughts.

1 -- Italians smoke? Good G*d, is your next revelation that Irish drink?
2 -- Perhaps they can aim better than you.
3 -- Italians think two open windows in an apartment in the summer is air conditioning, jackets in 75 degree weather stuns you?
4 -- How little do you eat? Last check, Italian portions aren't like US chain restaurants.

well said yewstulivnitalia !
Sarge, despite all the petty flaws that you have poorly highlighted, it is still well worth going there!!
Besides, how much did you pay for the backpackers dorm or you or your food. If you are eating a cheap meal, it hardly covers the cost for doggie bags; You stay in cheap hotels/backpackers and expect a 5 star treatment-wow! Italians wear jackets in 75 degree because, one, they can afford it and second, that is how they bodies are climatised.....
Repeat the mantra after me, "When in Rome be the Roman"!(pretty sure Americans have not learnt it yet, then again they do think nobody outside of American have maps and that is why they don't know where America is; yet they do know Iraq is hanging at the end of America or somewhere in Australia if you see the map upside down

Funny about the coats when it's 75 outside. We noticed that when we visited one October. Never mind it was 80 outside, it was fall so everyone was in fall clothes. Our pictures are so funny with everyone in winter clothes and us dressed for the actual weather.

Monica, you comment reminded me of when I was in Italy and friends invited me to a concert. It was the end of September and it was quite hot. I wore a lovely silk dress and high heeled dressy sandals and I was bare legged. Good grief, every Italian woman had on wool, wool suits, wool dresses, pantihose to match their outfits and winter pumps. Although I was probably the only woman dressed comfortable for the heat I felt so foolish, lol. They do tend to dress for the season versus for the weather.

I read sarge's comments as a piece of irony and humour. Some replies take her "rant" far too seriously, IMO.
And, to be honest, even with several dozen trips to foreign countries a year, I still have my "Why can't they do it like we do it back home because that is the proper way to do it" moments.

I so agree, Cowboy, I "know" sarge well as she posts in the Lounge and she is a fun and interesting woman. I hope she isn't so discouraged that she won't post her trip report. But I doubt that will be the case. And as much as I "love Italy" I do so wish the Italians would get the concept of getting in line, lol. That drives me absolutely crazy.

Thank you, Cowboy, and those who quickly figured out this was tongue-in-cheek. Seriously- you other folk need to lighten up. Did you miss the part where I said I thought Italy was the most fabulous place on Earth?
For those who get it, my trip report will be forthcoming shortly.

Very condescending reply.Don't you realize that these reply posts were "tounge in cheek", and poor attempts at sarcasm.
I thought that you would 'quickly" figure that out.Obviously, you just don't get it.
Neither irony or sarcasm is arguement.

sorry sarge, I've just reread your original post and the irony is so subtle it passes me by. [and I'm a Brit so I'm supposed to be able to "do" irony].
perhaps we need an "irony" emoticon? [an iron perhaps?]

Peter- just as a note, most U.S. restaurants do not take "second-hand" food into their kitchens. Places usually will give a container and you put into it what you would like to take home. It's a good way not to waste food.

"Perhaps Italians have learned how to shower without flooding the bathroom; if so, I wish they'd share a video or something."
They don't wash in the shower, they wash in bathtubs, and only rinse using the flexible shower.
Video? There was an episode of "everybody loves Raymond" in Italy showing exactly how to use that shower.

Well, that couldn't be the case all the time, because I have seen a number of showers in Europe that are like this where there's no bathtub to be seen. I think the key is low pressure, and turning the water off when you are soaping up, so that you don't use that much water, and what you use has the chance to drain.
