Just a few comments on our week in Paris last week
We had a wonderful week in Paris last week and did many of the typical things tourists do so I won't detail that but thought I would mention a few things that meant a lot to us:
1. Rick Steve's book was invaluable. We used it everywhere and saw and learned things we wouldn't have otherwise. For example, I would have never known about the ballroom in the Musee D'Orsay which was so very beautiful.
2. We were so intimidated by the Metro but once we tried it we were hooked. SO very easy.
3. Le Train Bleu was worth every penny. Simply gorgeous with delicious food and professional, attentive and friendly service. Don't miss the smoking rooms which is like stepping back in time to a different era.
4. The dinner cruise we took the last night is a wonderful memory. Called La Marina de Paris, they offered a delicious 3 course dinner with champagne and a bottle of wine in a lovely, elegant setting with excellent service for about $200 for 2. It was spectacular when the boat hovered under the Eiffel Tower until it sparkled. Such a memory!
5. Don't bother visiting the Rue Mouffetard. I read a charming description of it and its market and we trudged up hill forever to get there and then down the very long tacky Rue which offered nothing and the market was nothing to write home about.
6. Berthillon's ice cream is as delicious as all the wonderful things I read about.
7. Bring a compass and a small umbrella. Both were well used.
8. We found a little gem of a restaurant on Ile St. Louis called Le Caveau de L'Isle that we ate there 3 nights in a row. A 3 course beautifully presented meal was only 24.50 euros.
9. And last, I received so much valuable information for this trip through the months I planned it. Thanks to everyone.

Its next to the restaurant. I don't have my guide book with me but if you can find the restaurant, you make a right at the end there's this spectacular ballroom. Unfortunately you can't take flash pictures and when I did a Google search in Images, I only came up with a blurry picture.

When I went to Paris a few years ago for the first time after about 40 years, I also had Rick Steves Paris book, and found it invaluable. He has so much practical information, and the book is light to carry. I don't usually use his hotels, but did in another part of France, and was pleased.
