Jungfrau

We have 3 or 4 days in Switzerland, coming from Strassbourg before heading to Italy and would like to do Jungfrau. We were thinking of staying in Luzern originally. Could you please advise where is best to spend our few days. Is there somewhere close to Interlaken to stay for train trip or is it best to stay in the town. Any advice would be greatly appreciated with any aspect of Switzerland. Thank you

Interlaken would be the last place I'd stay. Stay higher in Lauterbrunnen, Wengen or Murren. Transport between the villages is a snap, especially if you have a train pass of some sort. The views from Wengen and Murren in particular are fabulous. Lauterbrunnen is situated down in the valley, surrounded by high cliffs and waterfalls. It's a transport hub of sorts - you can get to just about anywhere in the Berner Oberland from there.

We've stayed in all three, plus Grindelwald, many times. Our favorites are Murren and Wengen, with Lauterbrunnen coming in third. Grindelwald is just too busy for my tastes, and Interlaken is a full on small city. We mistakenly stayed in Interlaken on our very first visit to the area - never again.

Stayed in MURREN is Sept.
Our TOP pick for Hiking and trams up to the top.
Stayed at Edelweiss, basic, clean room, Id try for new additions but not necessary if not avail.
Good meals on gorgeous terrace.

Stay close and keep your schedule flexible. You want to go to the top on a clear day which might not be the day you originally planned.

We traveled easily from Grindelwald to the Jungfrau. When we were up at the top there a group of women from India in saris and sandals, bbrrr. It is cold up there! We layered sweaters and jackets. It was a huge highlight of our trip to Switzerland.

Thank you so much everyone. Will definitely be looking at staying outside . Is it necessary to prebook train? Will be travelling mid Sept.

The cableway/train ride from Grindelwald to Jungfraujoch lasts just 1 hr, from Wengen (more scenic journey) it^s 1 1/2 hrs.
I would stay at Wengen. Murren is outside the direct itinerary.
The train ride from Wengen to Milan will be a bit longer than from Interlaken, however (4 hrs instead of 3).

Hello Fraserx6

Interlaken is a good starting point for excursions to the Jungfrau and the Lauterbrunnen Valley. But if you want to be closer to the mountains, the villages of Grindelwald or Wengen are more suitable.

Have a great trip!
Martin
