Take a look at whichbudget.com for discount airfares between the two cities. Another poster here mentioned this site, and it's wonderful! Pretty sure that AlpiEagles, an Italian discount carrier flies this route, and can't believe that it's $500!
Also, not quite sure about this one, but if you are flying one of the OneWorld Alliance partners transatlantically, you may be able to add on discounted inter-European flights using the One World Europe Pass. European flights are broken down in zones according to mileage between cities. Go to OneWorld Alliance Products.com for all the info. Again, a poster here recommended this site to me, and because of it, I was able to save almost $3000 for my European trip next summer. If it will work for you, be persistent when making your reservations with your transatlantic carrier. I found many of the reservationists don't know a thing about this, so I had to get a supervisor.
